Heat Reserves Continue Run at Top
Harbour Heat Reserves maintained their lead at the top of the CBL Zone 1 with a comfortable 103-86 victory over the Breakers Academy. The Breakers began brightly with Junior Tall Black Sam King, who had 11 first quarter points impressing. The Heat scoring was shared amongst seven players, point guard Zac Fitzgerald the best with 6 points as they established a 27-23 advantage.
The Breakers were unable to maintain any defensive intensity in the second period giving up a further 28 points to trail 40-55 at the main break. Fitzgerald (16pts) continued to penetrate the Breakers defense and with Michael Dawson (10pts) making a pair of 3’s the Breakers were on the back foot. King led all scorers with 16points.
Tom Rowe had 6 early second half points for the Breakers as they responded to coach Judd Flavell’s request to take the ball into the paint. With 6:54 remaining in the quarter the lead had been reduced to eight points, 60-52 but any thoughts the Breakers had of narrowing the gap further were extinguished by two 3’s from Heat captain Dan Ryan and a couple of scores from Fitzgerald and forward Josh Davis. The third period closed with the Heat leading 76-62.
Patrice Bolstad had 10 final quarter points for the Breakers but the Heat’s all round scoring ability enabled them to cruise through the final quarter. Michael Dawson had a double double (15pts and 12 rebounds) for the Heat with Sam King recording excellent numbers for the losers (23 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists).
