The Under 10 Grand Final was played between this years top two teams, West End and TEDAS. With TEDAS having knocked off the previously undefeated West End in the Second Semi, it was sure to be a great contest.
It was a tight opening quarter with neither team able to get the upper hand, as both backlines repelled the ball out of defence at both ends of the ground. The opening score of the game came around the 10 minute mark of the quarter when West End managed a point. TEDAS responded with a point as well, and with only 15 seconds remaing before quarter time, TEDASs Josh Heard found the ball in a pack at half forward, spun out and sent a long right foot snap forward which cleared the pack and went through for a goal, giving TEDAS a 6 point lead at the first break.
West End opened the second quarter with some good marking, with Daniel Cunico sending a big kick to the goal square, which was marked by Jake Sands, who slotted it through for a goal to even the scores. Both backlines once again got on top, and the large crowd withnessed a great mark from Logan Van Berken running with the flight of the ball on the wing, getting crunched in the pack, but hanging on to the ball for a terrific gutsy mark. Danial Dunico was in the play again, scooping the ball up and running into an open goal, but his kicked hit the post, giving West End the lead by that point. Josh Heard took a strong mark at half forward for TEDAS and sent the ball forward with a pass to Lachlan Pawson, but his kick was cleared by West End. TEDAS were able to stop the ball, and with Josh Heard collecting the ball, dancing his way past 4 West End opponents, he sent a long kick forward with 10 seconds left on the clock for his second goal of the game and give TEDAS a 5 point lead at half time.
The third quarter saw West End come out and get on top early, and it wasnt long before the ball found its way into the hands of Jake Sands, who slotted his second goal, and the lead for West End. Once again the ball see-sawed between both backlines, and a highlight of the quarter was the strong marking of the kids, especially Jake Sands, Jai Slaby from West End and Josh Heard from TEDAS. With only seconds to go in the quarter, Ryan Thompson passed to Liam Barry, who found Jake Sands who kicked truly again just before the siren to extend West Ends lead to 8 points with a quarter to play.
Both coaches pleaded with their teams to give their all in this last quarter, as the game was up for grabs with either team able to win. The opening goal was going to be critical, and Jake Sands managed his 4th goal of the game after a pass from Thomas Webster. It wasnt long after when jake Sands found himself with the ball again and slotted through another goal and extend the margin to 20 points. The TEDAS kids continued to push the ball forward but without much luck, never giving up at any stage, trying to the very end. Daniel Cunico managed to find the ball and goal inside the last minute, giving West End the victory 6-4-40 to 2-1-13, winning the Premiership, with their last Premiership win being in 2005.
Both coaches were very proud of their teams as both put in terrific efforts throughout the season. Umpires Award for the Grand Final went to Jake Sands of West End.
The premiership Cup was presented by the Waters Family, and the Best on Ground was made by Bill Bishop.
The TDJFL congratulate West End on winning the 2009 Under 10 Premiership.
