The only real monties to get up last week were the Eagles from Mansfield with a 123 point win over the Benalla Saints. Mansfield had 11 goal kickers with Simon HART getting 6 and being named in the best behind young gun Adam BOSHEVSKI. Ricky SYMES kicked his usual large % of goals for Benalla with 2 to bring his tally up to 62 for the year. Brendan STEVENS was named the Saints best along with young Brady GREEN. With Kyabram's bad loss to Rochy under the lights at Ky. the Eagles have popped up to 2nd place on the ladder and have the double chance whereas Ky. slipped down to 3rd and unless things change this week-end, the Kyabram Bombers could go into a cut throat Elimination Final. Talking of Ky. they were totally nothing like the side they were two weeks previous when they were so good against Mooroopna under the lights on their big oval. Rochester looked like Ky. did the two weeks previous and boy o boy did'nt Rochester look good! Rochester won 21.9 (135) to Kyabram 8.12 (60). Sure, Ky. had at least 5 A Graders missing from their line-up but they were pretty ordinary. Elliott BOWEN copped a heavy knock and was stretchered off in the 3rd Quarter but from all reports he might miss this week against Mooroopna but will be right from then on. Heath AITKEN started off the night in brilliant touch having 3 goals by 1/4 time to finish with 4, as did Ben ANDERSON and Mattie LETCHER. The Tigers did not have a passenger whereas it was hard to find a winner over the 4 quarters for the Bombers. Shepparton United finished off very well against Echuca at Deakin Reserve to win by 11 points after being down by 14 points at 3/4 time - United won 13.9 (87) to Echuca 11.10 (76) - The Demons were certainly boosted by the returns of Clinton EDWARDS and Joe PERKOVIC who were named in the best along with young Matt LOOBY. Jordon FLORENCE kicked 4 majors for the Murray Bombers and Tom McKITTRICK was named Echuca's best player. Perhaps a surprise to some was the victory the Shepparton Swans enjoyed over the Seymour Lions at Princess Park. The Swans lead all day to run out winners by just 7 points, Swans 17.6 (108) to Seymour 15.11 (101). A report from this game states that Damien YZE had not kicked a goal by 1/4 time but the facts are he ended up with 9 in a sterling performance. At the other end of the ground Saad SAAD only managed to boot 2 to take his season's tally to 84, 12 ahead of Damien YZE. Mitchell KEDDELL ruck-roved the entire game and took an outstanding 19 marks in amongst his 45 disposals - sounds like 3 Morrison Medal votes for sure. Brendan LIDDELL and the COLBERT brothers were named as the Lions best players. Euroa have finished the season off in fine style and should go up to Echuca this week-end full of confidence. The Magpies knocked over the Shepparton Bears 18.15 (123) to 15.14 (104). Andrew DOXEY and Matt MILLS both kicked 5 and were not named in the best so that sort of says something does it not? Obviously a very good team effort. Rhys O'SULLIVAN and Chris CULLINAN were named Shepp's best. Perhaps another bit of a turn-up to most punters was the good win by the Mooroopna Cats over the Tatura Bulldogs. The Cats looked to be home and almost hosed at 3/4 time when they were up by nearly 7 goals but the Bulldogs powered home to kick 7 goals 6 to Mooroopna's 3 goals in the last quarter but the Bullies ran out of time to go down by 11 points. The final score was :- Mooroopna 20.7 (127) to Tatura 16.20 (116). Robert OSBORNE kicked 5 for the Cats - Tim LITTLE kicked 7 for the Dogs. The Cats will remain locked in 5th possie on the ladder to go into an Elimination Final next week and there obviously will be some concern with what sounds like season finishing injuries to Chris SCHIRMER and fellow defender Trevor BELL along with youngster Brad ORR who has done his collarbone. Footy can be a damn cruel game at times. The Bulldogs best were Tim LITTLE and Ben COSGRIFF - Chris SCHIRMER was named the Cats best despite going off before the final bell.
A lot of questions will be asked throughout the League on Saturday as to whats happening down at Kings Park in Seymour. Seymour host Shepparton who are level with wins and losses as the Lions - 8 wins, 9 losses a peice. Winners play finals, she's mothballs for the loser. This is a bit like the Hawthorn v Essendon game in the AFL where the finals are starting a week early as we are here. Because Seymour have a way better % having scored 203 points more than Shepp. and having had 288 points less kicked against them and the fact the Lions have Saad SAAD and the game is at Seymour and the fact that Seymour have been in the last 4 grand-finals - this could be enough to get the Lions over the line and into an Elimination Final next week. Although; if Marc HARRAP is fit and up and about and if Ed CLARKE is 100% then the Bears could scrape in. Hmmmm! The COLBERT boys, LIDDELL, SCHOTTNER, etc., etc. This tipsters says the Lions by 5 goals. Not only does this game at Seymoure provide plenty of interest so too does the clashes between the Swans and Kyabram at Princess Park and the Mansfield v Tatura game up at Mansfield. Obviously both Ky. and Mansfield must win to stake a claim for the 2nd spot and the double chance. If Ky. lose to the Swans and Tatura defeat Mansfield, the Bulldogs could jump up to 3rd possie and then play in the 3rd v 6th Elim. final. Its all what ifs is'nt it? Swans v Kyabram ???? If Josh VICK plays on Damien YZE, if Paul NEWMAN and Chris ATKINS and Matt DELEDIO and all the rest of the Bombers main men all play then Ky should win, but, they will have to improve hugely on last Saturday nights effort. The Bombers by 8 goals. Mansfield at home to the Bulldogs - the tipster states the Eagles by 2 or 3 goals to shore up 2nd possie and lock in a double chance. Some might believe the Eagles have the best home ground & home crowd advantage of all the GVFL clubs but they certainly enjoyed the big Benalla ground last week and will be champing at the bit to have a crack at Rochester at Deakin next week-end. With United's good win over Echuca last week at Deakin and the fact they play at Deakin again this round, the tipster has the Demons defeating Benalla by a good 8 or 9 goals to go into the off season feeling good about themselves in that things will get better next year with some A Grade additions. Rochester should account for Mooroopna at the Moon oval - the Tigers were brilliant last Saturday night whereas the Cats will be a bit sore and missing two or three very good players. The Tige's by a fair bit. The clash up on the Murray River between the hosts Echuca v the Magpies from Euroa should also be a very interesting game. Because of Euroa's recent excellent form by their kids and elder statesmen, the tipster tips the Maggies by about 4 goals.
Then Bang!, we are into the finals - a whole new ball game. Don't forget the MORRISON/WELLMAN Medals Vote Count Night at the G.V. Hotel in Shepparton on Monday 14th September starting at 6:15pm. See your Club for tickets - last years evening was excellent, this years evening will be better with an improved sound system, more screens to watch the votes and the drink prices reduced from what thet were last time.
