Euroa's terrific win over Mooroopna has called for the re-appointment of David PUTAMORSI from none other than veteran and loyal Magpie Scott WATSON. The young Maggies won by 2 goals 16.10 (106) to 13.16 (94) after being down by 25 points at 1/4 time. Andrew DOXEY capped of the fine work of the kids by booting 7 goals. Tatura were big winners over Seymour, the Bulldogs shook off a bit of dust to prepare for the finals with a convincing win 22.16 (148) to 12.9 (81). James SULLIVAN and Cam TREWIN both slotted 4 - Saad SAAD was restricted to 3 goals but is a shoe-in to win the True Boot award as he now has 82 majors to lead Paul NEWMAN from Ky who has booted 65. Damien YZE from the Swans has 63. Echuca defeated the Shepparton Swans 18.11 (119) to 11.11 (77) with Ray DOLAN restricting Damien YZE to only 2 goals but the Swans spearhead did appear under duress with an ankle complaint. Matt HEBBARD kicked 5 for the Swans in a tight contest with Andrew BRIGGS. Mansfield spanked Shepparton United up in the hills - the Eagles kicked 28.16 (184) to the Demons 12.7 (79) - David MENSCH returned with an oomph by kicking 6 and the HART brothers kicked 9 between them. Ross HOPKINS was named the Eagles best while Shannon CAMPBELL and Phil CARROLL were named the Demons best. Rochester scored a 139 point win over Benalla - final score was 25.25 (175) to the Saints 5.6 (36) - Ash WATSON and Ben DEUSCHER were the Tigers best in a very good overall team performance - Brendan STEVENS was the Saints best. At Deakin Reserve, Kyabram doubled Shepparton's final score - the Bombers won 18.13 (121) to 8.12 (60). David NEWMAN kicked 5, brother Paul dobbed 2 - youngsters Nathan BECK and Adam LOVISON were named in the Bombers best while Rhys O'SULLIVAN and Tim FELDTMANN were listed as the Bears best.
Round 17 :- This 6th spot on the ladder is really creating some excitement with the Lions and the Bears locked on 8 wins each but Seymour have a healty advantage of about 20% but it is the 4 points that counts - not the percentage! Obviously both must win to keep their finals hopes alive and then go head to head next week in Seymour. The Lions travel North to Princess Park to take on the Swans - Bernie HABERMAN and his boys will be pretty dirty on dropping the game last week on their home turf against Tatura so they should be hell bent on taking the 4 points. There is an injury cloud surrounding Damien YZE but the Swans still have plenty of other very good players the Lions must be mindful of. Have the Swans forgot what it is like to win? The tipsters select the Lions to win but not by much. The other game of significant interest is over at the Memorial Oval in Euroa where the young red hot Magpies take on the desperate Shepparton Bears. This game could be a real beauty if Warby's determination to win gets into the Bears blood. The Magpies should win to make something of their season and travel up to Echuca next week to finish of the year in fine form. Benalla host Mansfield who will enjoy the big oval and by rights should account for the Saints comfortably - will Mattie STORER return to the Eagle's seniors this week? if he does, what a bonus on top of the list Mansfield has! Shepparton United host the Echuca Murray Bombers at Deakin - with the expected return of Clinton EDWARDS and Joe PERKOVIC the Demons should go into this game with confidence and could take the points. Tatura, one would think after their good form against Seymour should defeat Mooroopna but the Cats will be smarting from their loss to Euroa so this game too could be a real beautie at Tatura. Probably the game of the round will be over at Kyabram which starts at 7PM - this is a NIGHT GAME against Rochester. The 3rds kick off at 3pm, the Reserves at 5pm and the Seniors at 7pm. Top of the ladder Rochester with 14 wins v 2nd on the ladder Kyabram with 13 wins - Rochy have kicked 43 more points than the Bombers and have a stingier defence - Ky. have had 185 points more kicked against them that the Tiges - thats at about 31 goals over 16 games which is about 2 goals per game. However, with the expected return of the new Mr WITHERS and because this game is under lights and at Kyabram - the tipsters have installed Ky as the short priced favourite.
What a terrific round of footy with probably only the Benalla / Mansfield game a sure bet - but then again footy can be a funny game. Whatever the results - please enjoy our wonderful game and all that goes with it!
