An OLD-fashioned halftime rev-up from coach Steve Daniel spurred South Cairns to a comfortable 68-point win over Norths at Watsons Oval on Saturday.
Daniel is not a man to tolerate mediocrity and was not impressed with what the AFL ladder leaders produced in the second quarter of the round-18 clash.
The Cutters’ led by three goals at quarter-time but any dominance established early was lost through careless football as the Tigers fought back in the second term to trail by 13 points at the break.
"No, I wasn’t a happy camper," a somewhat calmer Daniel said of his halftime spray.
"Our first quarter was quite good but our second quarter was atrocious and I let the boys know that.
"There’s no holding back now. There are four games to go and then there’s finals.
"There were certain parts of our game that were not up to scratch. We needed to improve that and we did."
To be fair to the Cutters, the Tigers deserved credit for showing up with the intent of sticking it to one of the competition benchmarks.
In the first and second quarters especially, the Tigers made plenty of excursions into the opposition 50m but committed defending from the Cutters, led by giant ruckman Andrew Browning, repelled the majority of raids.
But after halftime, with Daniel’s blast still ringing in their ears like cathedral bells, the Cutters were the side doing all the attacking.
