INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL
CHINA VERSUS AUSTRALIA
The eighteen fielded by China in the annual football match played on Monday last, King’s birthday, included several noted Chinese exponents of Australian code football.
From the bounce of the ball it was seen that China had one object in view.
Grim determination combined with a great turn of speed and, at times, a perfect understanding impressed the onlooker and it was evident that the game was not of the usual picnic standard.
Mornington was hard pressed and quickly realised that the visitors were a combination not to be treated lightly.
Snappy, sparkling football with the ball flashing from one end of the field of play to the other thrilled the spectators and enthusiastic cheers from the visitors’ followers must surely have roused our placid township from its proverbial “Rip Van Winkle” sleep.
At the change of ends China quickly forged ahead, their speedy wingmen showing to advantage, Mornington, however were not to be denied and many beautiful exhibitions of hand ball and perfect position play steadied the opposition.
The pace showed no slackening and grim determination struggles continued until the half time bell.
After the half time breather, play for some time was of an even tempo but towards the close of the quarter China unleashed a series of classical bursts and clever movements.
The last quarter opened with many exciting tussles.
China well in the lead put everything they new into the play.
Victory seemed established, but Mornington staging one of their old time exhibitions, reminiscent of last season, took charge of the game and commenced to overhaul their opponents.
Points came quickly but time was the essence of the contract and the final bell came too quickly, China running out victors by 8 points.
Mornington was well served by Flood, Hill, Young, Vic Fyffe, J.Birch, Geo. Hutchins.
Geo. Waller staging a praise-worthy comeback, showed some of his old time form that thrilled the fans in his hectic league days of a few years back.
Special mention is due to Umpire Frimley for the admirable and capable manner in which he handled the game.
His interpretations and administration of the rules were of an extremely high order and an object lesson to present day league umpires operating on the Mornington Peninsula.
Summed up, this old time Association umpire gave one of the best displays of umpiring seen in Mornington for some years.
