Saturday produced another great day for footy weather wise and we had some very good games in all the age groups.
The closest game of the round was that between Pax Hill and Police Boys, 5 v 6. Pax Hill needed a win to stay in contention for finals and they managed that by the barest margin of 1 point over a very competitive and gallant Police Boys team. West End continued its unbeaten run, while TEDAS (2nd) accounted for fourth placed Combined Saints. With only two rounds remaining, West End, TEDAS and Southside have consolidated their finals spots, with the last position being a battle between Combined Saints and Pax Hill, both on 28 points and only 3 percent separating them. Since they play each other this week in Round 13, and looking ahead to Round 14, this game on Saturday I think will give the winner the last spot in the finals.
Combined Saints continued their unbeaten run in the Under 12s with a hard fought win over a very competitive TEDAS. Glengarry consolidated second spot with a win over Cumberland Park. The upset of the round was West End (5th) losing to Southside (8th). Southside obviously played to their potential on the day and probably should have won by more due to their inaccuracy, kicking 9-18-72 to 2-3-15. This has all but ended West Ends chances of making the finals, as they will need to win both of the remaining two games, along with good margins to close the gap with Churchill, hoping they drop their last two games, of which the Round 14 match is with West End.
In the Under 14s, there were some high scoring games between West End and Southside, along with Churchill and City Juniors. West End had a good win to hold on to top spot by percentage from Pax Hill, while the win for City Juniors moved them into fourth spot on the ladder at the expense of Southside. City and Southside will battle it out for that last spot, and it may very well come down to percentage, as they both play top three teams in the final two rounds, so if either team can get a win over one of the top three, it may just guarantee their spot for the finals in 2009.
Glengarry consolidated their spot at the top of the Under 16 ladder and remain undefeated for 2009 with a good win over Combined Saints 136 to 64. It must be said, that I was told that Glengarry displayed very good sportsmanship on the day to help Combined Saints out with players that helped maintain a competitive spirit with the match which should be congratulated. Other winners were Churchill, TEDAS and West End. It looks like the top four is settled, but their actual positions can still change. Southside, fifth, have a slim chance of making the finals, but would need West End to lose both of their remaining matches, and they would need to knock off the undefeated Glengarry in the last round to have any chance, and you never know........
Fingers crossed the weather holds off again this weekend, as City Juniors and West End take on each other this Friday night under lights at the West End Complex, while the remainder of the matches are completed on Saturday.
