Did the Benalla Saints give the Tatura Bulldogs a bit of a scare over at the Benalla Showgrounds last Saturday? Benalla were down by 5 goals at 3/4 time but outscored the Bullies 5 goals 7 to 3 goals 2 in the last quarter. Final score was Tatura 18.10 (118) to Benalla 16.10 (106). Had Benalla kicked 7 goals 5 instead of 5 goals 7 perhaps the Saints would have been the winners. Tommy DURWOOD kicked 4 for the Bullies, Ricky SYMES kicked 4 for Benalla. Al JACKA was named best for Benalla but he will be back with the Murray Bushrangers this week. Mooroopna defeated Shepp United at Deakin by 10 goals, 16.13 (109) to 7.7 (49) - United were very disappointing as a unit but Phil CARROLL could certainly hold his head up high. Marcus DEAN kicked 4 for the Cats, Robbie OSBORNE slotted 3 and was pretty well held by Peter RALPH who did a pretty good job. Simon HART kicked 7 for the Mansfield Eagles up in the High Country to help Mansfield reach the score of 19.12 9126) to defeat Seymour 14.8 (92) - Dan ROY and Ross HOPKINS were named the Eagles best, Paul COLBERT and Shane SCHOTTNER were the best for the Lions. (Could Paul COLBERT win the Morrison?) Rochester recorded a very sound win over Echuca, 21.14 (140) to 3.6 (24) - Elliott BOWEN kicked 6, Ben DEUSCHER 5 and Nathan WHIPP kicked 3. The Murray Bombers were very disappointing and were kept goalless in the first and last quarters. At Princess Park in Shepparton, the visitors Shepparton lasted to defeat the Swans by 2 points - Shepp. 13.8 (86) to the Swans 12.12 (84) - Brett VALLENDER kicked 4 and was named in the best and in the umpires report book (cleared at Tribunal on Wednesday night) Shane SALI kicked his career best tally of goals with 7. The Kyabram Bombers had a 98 point win over the Euroa Magpies, 20.18 (138) to 6.4 (40) - Lincoln WITHERS kicked 3 and was named in the Bomber's best (Could Linc go back to back with the Morrison?)
The match of the Round for this week would have to be at Tatura where the Bulldogs host Kyabram. Paul KIRBY and Ben COSGRIFF should be back for the Bullies after representing the VCFL last Sunday - will Paul NEWMAN be right to take the field for the Bombers? Both have won 10 and lost 3 - there is only 3.42% between the two. Tatura are the League leaders with points for (1599) whereas Ky have only had 950 points kicked against them which says they have the second best defence in the league - Rochester have had the least amount kicked against them (841). Everything points to this being a really good game with Linc WITHERS going up against Linc WELLINGTON - Cameron TREWIN up against Josh VICK - Tat's defence may be their soft spot - if Paul NEWMAN plays the tipsters say Kyabram. Mooroopna are home to Benalla and will have to be at their best to account for the Saints who will be busting for a scalp after their close call last week - the Cats should win. Shepparton host United at Deakin on Saturday at the normal starting times - if Ed CLARKE is fit and plays for the Bears, the tipsters say the Bears will win, if he is out the Demons could get the points. Youngster Michael LOOBY played quite well in his debut Senior game with the Demons last Sunday - also too, the Bears have 7 days preparation for this game whereas United have had 6 days. The reigning Premiers Rochester should win and win well against the Shepparton Swans over at Moon Oval. Both Mansfield and Tatura have higher "points for" than Rochy so the Tiger's could go on the rampage to stamp themselves as top of the ladder. Mansfield by rights should get the 4 points over Echuca who have to take the long trip. Is Shane CRAWFORD and a HOLLAND or two going to make their debut for the Eagles this week-end? What about Tony WOODS the musical Hawk? Is he too going to play? Seymour host Euroa at Kings Park on SUNDAY - Saad SAAD only kicked one last week up at Mansfield, he will be itching to get back in amongst the goals this week so look out. Also, can anyone man up Paul COLBERT? Next Round, Round 15 , will be played over the next two week-ends, August the 1st and August the 8th and played with the BEYOND BLUE theme to support and understand those who suffer from depression. Lets hope the weather is fine, that the grounds are in good nick and that all games are played in good spirits.
