All games were play mostly in terrific conditions for footy on Saturday, however, a couple of early games were hindered by the fog.
In the Under 10s, West End cemented their place at the top of the ladder and a certain finals berth with a win over the fourth placed Combined Saints. With only three games to go, there looks like only fourth spot on the ladder available, as the top three of West End, TEDAS and Southside look quite settled. The battle between Combined Saints, Pax Hill and Police Boys for that last spot may hinge on the result between Pax Hill and Combined Saints in Round 13. I am sure the teams filling spots 7 to 10 will be hoping to finish off the season with some good footy, and maybe knocking off higher placed teams to finish off on a positive note.
Southside (7th) Under 12s took on Churchill (4th) looking to keep their slim finals hopes alive. They managed to keep Churchill scoreless in the first quarter, but only managed a point themselves. Churchill lifted in the second to score a couple of goals, while Southside could only manage another point. Obvioulsy it was a tight contest, as neither team was able to establish a handy lead, with both teams adding a goal for the third quarter, and Churchill holding a 15 point lead going into the last quarter. Southside once again held Churchill scoreless, but managed to only score 1 gola 2 for the quarter, and go down by 5 points in a tight, even game of junior footy. The other close game of the round saw Cumberland park score their fourth win of the season with a 20 point win over a very competitive Pax Hill 61 to 41. Other winners were the top three, Combined Saints, Glengarry and TEDAS. These three look like they have a spot in the finals wrapped up, with Churchill, West End and City Juniors all within reach of taking that fourth spot. All three teams have some tough games in the last three rounds, with next weeks game, Churchill v City Juniors, or even the Round 14 clash of Churchill v West End having a major influence on who will finish fourth.
In the Under 14s, it was great to see the sportsmanship of the Pax Hill (2nd) kids come to the fore, as they evened up with Cumberland Park (9th) to put on a high scoring affair in their match. Pax Hill ran out winners to consolidate their second place on the ladder, 18-13-121 to 9-7-61. West End defeated Combined Saints to maintain their top of the ladder position, with other winners being TEDAS, Southside and City Juniors. With all the top 5 ladder teams having a win, the final four is far from settled, with fifth placed City Juniors and fourth placed Southside still having a slim chance to finish top if results go their way. Southside have the toughest run home, as they play the top three teams in the final three rounds, so I am sure they will be out to make a statement in the last three weeks and reinforce their place in the top four.
There were some great games played in the Under 16s this round. Glengarry (1st) came out and handed a football lesson to TEDAS (2nd) with Jack Heiser kicking 10 goals in this one-sided game between what was the two top teams. One can only guess that TEDAS played below their best today, as when the two teams last met, it was a draw, and will be looking to regain some of their earlier good form in the last three games before the finals. Churchill reclaimed second spot on the ladder with a 1 point win over the fifth placed Southside. Neither team had their kicking boots on, as both scored more behinds than goals. Churchill were able to open up a 4 goal lead by half time, 45 to 21, but the second half belonged to Southside, as they continued to go forward and add scoreboard pressure and fall that agonising one point short of a draw, or two of a win and a good close game, 9-13-67 to 9-12-66. Southside sit in fifth position, one game behind West End, and will need to produce Saturday's form in the next three games as they try and get that 4th ladder position to play finals in 2009.
Games to watch in Round 12, in the Under 16s, the close one be Southside taking on TEDAS, Under 14s Glengarry looking for their first win of the year against Cumberland Park, and West End first against Southside fourth. Under 12s, Combined Saints first, taking on third placed TEDAS, Churchill fourth v City Juniors sixth, and Pax Hill looking for their first win over ninth placed Police Boys. West End under 10s will be looking to extend their unbeaten run against the third placed Southside, while TEDAS second tackle fourth placed Combined Saints, while Cumberland Park (9th) will be looking for their second win of the year when they take on 8th paced Glengarry. Lets hope the weather is as good next week as it was this week and we get to witness some great junior footy again. Good luck to all teams.
