On Monday the 29th of June 100 of the regions young guns descended upon Rockville Park to enhance their skills at the AFL Darling Downs’ second annual Super Clinic. It was a cold start for the Development staff arriving at 6:30 in the morning to set up, however spirits were high and a fun day had just begun.
The first participants started to arrive at 8, with sign up beginning at 8:15. Once sign up was completed the children were split into their 3 age groups: 6-9 yrs old, 10-13 yrs old and 14-16 yrs old. The 6-9 age group was run by the newest addition to the AFL office, young Kyle Smith helped out by Tom Zilm, Dusty ‘Suzie’ Wilson, Shai Clement and Matthew Waltisbuhl. The 10-13 age group was run by Development Officer Jeff ‘Nemo’ Neumann and helped out by Steve Harbort and James Adams.
The oldest age group, 14-16 yrs old was run by Keith Webb. All three groups started off the morning learning how to do a Drop Punt Kick. This was followed by different rotations for the groups, and then a morning tea break. After morning tea the kids were visited by several special guests. Brisbane Lions players Pat Garner and Kieran King came up to the Toowoomba in the cold to run a few drills and sign autographs for the kids. While the Lions players were there two other special guests showed up.
Chase the Dragon and the L.J Hooker Bear were favourites among the kids while after lunch Bernie Gabba Vegas also joined in on the party. Bernie came with the Brisbane Lions Van and handed out some Lions giveaways. There was a brief kicking competition between the mascots, which was won by Chase the Dragon. After lunch the two younger groups played AFL Auskick games against each other, while the older kids played some skills development games. Overall the day ran very smoothly and fun was had by all.
The AFL Queensland staff would like to thank Brett and Lucas Kleidon, Dusty Wilson, Robyn Rissman and Wayne Waltisbuhl for helping out on the day.
