The University Cougars take on the Goondiwindi Hawks this weekend in the first senior AFL game played in Dalby for 3 years. The Dalby club is looking to re enter the AFLDD senior competition in 2010 and will use this game as a promotional tool for anyone wishing to be involved in playing for the Swans seniors next year.
The Swans have a great group of young talented players coming through their junior ranks, especially in the U16 age bracket where many of these players will be eligible for seniors next season. It is hoped that with the mix of these young talented players and the return of some senior players plus new faces to the club that the Dalby Swans will have the player base to field a very competitive senior side in the 2010 Allied Pickfords Cup.
The senior game between 2006/7 premiers University and the Goondiwindi Hawks will follow a full round of competitive junior grades where the ever conquering Dalby Swans juniors will take on the Hawks in the U12, U14 and U16 age brackets. Remarkably, the Swans sit atop of the ladder in the U16 and U12 age divisions with both sides boasting an undefeated record so far this season. The U14 swans side is also travelling very well in third place but this weekends blockbuster game will be in the U16’s where the Swans and the Hawks are separated by only 1 win with many believing that this weekends game will be a preview of the 2009 premiership game.
This junior game will showcase some of the best young AFL talent on the Darling Downs with the likes of Lachie Dignan, Scott Goodlet and Sam Rockliff for the Swans facing up against Joel Barr, Tyson Haigrel and Jo Verney for the Hawks.
Dalby president, Tony Butcher, stated that “this weekend’s format is Dalby is a win / win for the club. On one hand the junior games will allow everyone who comes along to witness some of the best junior football played all season while on the other hand the senior game will give everyone a taste of senior footy out this way again and hopefully stir interest for our senior side for next year”.
The senior game between the Hawks and the Cougars is also a very important game for both clubs as they both hold on to the slim chance of scraping into the finals this year. The team who loses this weekend almost certainly assures that they will miss out on a 2009 finals campaign while the winner’s season remains alive.
The Junior U12 game kicks off at 9:45am with the U16 blockbuster starting at 12:30pm and the senior game at 2:30pm. Come along to what should be a terrific day of AFL and register your interest to Tony Butcher for the Dalby Seniors for 2010.
