Eight VFL/AFL premierships, three Norm Smith medals, 647 matches and both players captained their clubs for two years. Simon Madden and Gary Ayres were both champions of their era and the Northern Bullants are fortunate to have them speak at the club's Business Network Breakfast on Friday 24 July.
The pair are two of the key players from two teams, Essendon and Hawthorn, that dominated the mid-1980s. Both players have impressive footballing Resumes.
Madden holds Essendon's games record, playing 378 matches from 1974 to 1992. He won his club's Best & Fairest award four times, played in three winning premierships and won a Norm Smith medal for being judged best afield in the 1985 Grand Final. Madden also had the honour of captaining his club in 1980 and 1981 and was named as Ruckman in the Essendon Team of the Century. Simon Madden was recently inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.
Ayres played 269 matches from 1978 to 1993 playing for rival Hawthorn. He was a part of Hawthorn's stellar period winning five premierships. Not being satisfied by just being a part of the occasion, Ayres was influential in the premierships having being awarded the Norm Smith medal twice - one of only two players in history to do so. He captained his club in 1992 and 1993 and before this honour captained Victoria in the 1989 State of Origin series. Ayres went on to coaching Geelong and Adelaide.
