Round 8 kicked off on Friday night with games between Combined Saints and Southside in all age groups, plus an extra Under 10 game between Police Boys and City Juniors.
Great weather once again for footy, although I am sure they are some people who were out watching Friday night might say it was a little bit chilly!
The Under 10 match of the Round was played on Friday night between Combined Saints and Southside, third versus fourth. Combined Saints jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter by kicking 2 goals 3 to a solitary point and lead by 14 points at quarter time. In the second term, Southside came out firing and dominated the term kicking four goals to one, and hold a small 4 point lead at half time. Combineds inaccurate goal kicking was causing some concern, having 6 scoring shots but only managing 2 goals for the term, while Southside kicked 1 goal, and surrender the lead, and trail by 6 points. In the last quarter, the game really tightened up as neither team was able to dominate, and Combined Saints held a slender lead of 5 points with only a couple of minutes to go when Southside kicked one of their two goals for the quarter and snathc a very exciting one point win, 7-3-45 to 6-8-44 in what was a great even footy contest.
Police Boys and City Juniors was the close game of the round in Under 12s. City looking to stay in touch with the top four, and Police Boys looking for their second win of the year. The game was won in the first half, as City kicked 5 straight goals to Police Boys 2 goals 3 and lead by 15 points at half time. In the second half, it was a very tight game, with the scores quite even due to good work by both backlines, with City only outscoring them by a goal to win by 21 points, 7-4-46 to 3-7-25, and just one win from 4th position on the ladder.
Arch rivals from the past few years, the undefeated Pax Hill and 2nd placed West End did battle in the Under match of the round. West End scored the first goal of the game, but Pax Hill managed to kick three goals after this and lead by 12 points at quarter time. In the second quarter, both teams found it very hard as both backlines stood up and made scoring difficult, West End only managing 4 behinds, while Pax kicked a goal for the quarter, and extend their lead to 26 to 12. In the third quarter, West End started to get on top and create a few more opportunities for themselves, which was reflected on the scoreboard with three goals to one during the term, reducing the margin to just 3 points at the last change. In the final quarter, both teams lifted, but neither team was able to gain control of the contest as it went down to the wire. At the final siren, it was West End who managed 3 goals to two for the term to get up and snatch victory in a terrific game of footy and maintain 2nd place on the ladder, while Pax Hill dropped to third after TEDAS had a big win over Glengarry.
There weren't too many close games in the Under 16s, with Glengarry first, taking on fourth placed West End. In the first term, neither team managed to gain any ascendancy, as both teams struggled to kick goals, and at quarter time, Glengarry lead by a point, 1-3-9 to 1-2-8. In the second term, it was much the same, a dour struggle by both teams with each backline doing a solid job to pressure and restrict the opportunities for the forwards to kick goals. At half time, Glengarry lead 3-8-26 to 3-4-22. After half time, Glengarry came out firing to show just why they sit on top of the ladder, as they kicked away with 9 scoring shots to 2, adding 5 goals 4 behinds to 2 points, and take a lead of 36 points going into the last quarter. Glengarry added a further 5 goals in the last term, and credit to the West End kids, as they continued to create chances for themselves, adding 2 goals, but eventually go down, 13-15-93 to 5-8-38.
In this week's coming matches in Round 9, Pax Hill Under 16s will be looking for their first win against City Juniors. There should be some crackers in Under 14s, as TEDAS, first, take on Pax Hill third, Combined Saints sixth, looking for a win over City Juniors fourth to maintain touch with the top four, and Police Boys 7th, take on Churchill who are 8th. In the Under 12s, City Juniors 5th take on the undefeated Combined Saints who sit on top, and Police Boys, 9th, looking for their 2nd win of the year against West End who sit 6th, who must win to keep their finals hopes alive. TEDAS 2nd, ersus Pax Hill 5th in the Under 10s should be a good contest, along with Combined Saints 4th, taking on City Juniors just one win behind sitting in 7th position. I am sure all teams would like to have a win going into the School Holiday break, before the final 5 rounds are played leading up to this years finals.
