Saints star in national rep teamHER team may have came away from the 2009 National Women's Championships in Perth empty-handed, but the Northern Territory's Kirsty Irvine played solidly enough to win an All-Australian jumper.
Selection was based on the performance of players throughout the championships, including the Divisions 1 and 2 grand finals, won by Victoria and South Australia respectively.
Irvine (pictured) was a strong performer for the win-less Kites in Perth. She plays for the powerful St Mary’s team in the women’s league in Darwin.
The selectors took into consideration a player's 'conduct and sportsmanship during the championships, with any player reported and found guilty made ineligible for selection. Players weren't picked for a particular position but a captain, vice-captain, coach and assistant coach are nominated'.
As expected, the undefeated Victorians provided the bulk of the All-Australian team, while runners-up WA, and Queensland, also well represented.
A further 18 players were named from the championships to join the All-Australian 22 as part of a national women's AFL talent squad. These included Indigenous women Natasha Pauatjimi and Bo De la Cruz, both from the NT.
