Round 7 kicked off on icy cold Friday night with Police Boys taking on Combined Saints in 3 age groups, and Pax Hill v Combined Saints in the Under 16s, with the remainder of the games played in terrific conditions on the Saturday.
The close game of the round for the Under 10s was between Police Boys and Combined Saints. After a tight opening quarter, Combined Saints led by a point, but in the second quarter. Police Boys kept them scoreless while adding 2 goals 3 behinds to take a handy 21 to 7 at half time. Combined Saints tighted up in the all important third quarter to kick 2 goals 4 behinds to Police Boys solitary point, to wrestle back the lead by a point at the final change. The last quarter was another even affair, with Combined Saints scoring 2 goals to 1, to run out winners 38 to 26 in a terrific game of footy. In other games, West End kept their unbeaten run going, with other winners being TEDAS, Pax Hill and Southside.
The Under 12 match of the round was TEDAS (3) v Churchill (4). This game was always going to be close, and neither team was able to gain the ascendancy in the first term, as scoring opportunities were limited, with Churchill leading 1-2-8 to 1 point at quarter time. TEDAS managed just one goal for the second term, while Churchill added 1 goal 3, and lead 17 to 7 at half time. The third term was very similar to the first two, as neither team was able to add pressure via the scoreboard with an even term again, and at the final change, Churchill's lead just 24 to 15. TEDAS upped the ante in the last term searching for goals to peg back the lead, but were inaccurate and only managed 7 behinds to Churchills 1 goal, and go down 4-6-30 to 2-10-22. In other matches, Combined Saints maintained their unbeaten run, and other winners were Glengarry, City Juniors and Cumberland Park.
City Juniors took on the yet to be beaten Pax Hill team in the Under 14s hoping to cause a bit of an upset. Pax Hill got off to a good start in the first term, kicking 4 goals to 1 and open up a 20 point lead at the first change. The second quarter, City Juniors applied more pressure and created more scoring opportunities for themselves but were unable to convert accurately, and trailed by 4 goals at the long break. Pax Hill reasserted their authority in the third quarter, as they added 5 goals to 1 and extend their lead to 46 points which was going to make it tough for the City Juniors kids to come back. To their credit, they stuck to their task in the last term, never giving up and having their best quarter of the game, with final scores being 105 to 51 and pax Hill remaining undefeated. Other winners were Combined Saints, Southside, West End and TEDAS.
Friday night, Pax Hill looking for their first win of the season took on Combined Saints in the Under 16 match of the round. The first quarter saw both sides create scoring opportunities, with Combined Saints being more accurate, to lead 3-1-19 to 2-4-16 at quarter time. Pax Hill started to get on top and restricted Combined to only 3 points in the second quarter, and while only adding 1-3 for the term, managed to go into the long break with the slender lead of 3 points. The third quarter saw the ball rebounded often by each back line, as neither team generated many scoring chances, and Pax Hill still lead at the final change by 5 points. Combined Saints came out in the last quarter and played some of their best footy of the night as they managed to kick 4 goals to 2 for the term to run out winners 56 to 48 in an exciting contest of junior footy played under lights. Other winners for this round included Glengarry, TEDAS in a close one over Churchill and West End.
We are now at the half way mark of the season, and all age groups have teams yet to be defeated, along with teams looking for their first win of the year. In next week's matches, Cumberland Park or Churchill (Under 10s) have the chance to win their first match of the year when these two teams play. In the Under 12s, Glengarry (2nd) play TEDAS (3rd), and Pax Hill (10th) will be hoping to notch their first win of the season against West End (8th). Pax Hill, on top and undefeated take on second placed West End in the match of the round for the Under 14s, and in the Under 16s, Southside (5th) take on Combined Saints (6th), with both teams looking for a win to stay in touch with the top four sides.
