Casey Scorpions key defender Alex Silvagni will play his 50th game in tomorrow's big ABC TV clash against Werribee at Casey Fields.
Nicknamed 'SOS' after Carlton great Stephen, Silvagni’s trademark aggression makes him one of the best defenders in the VFL.
The Vice Captain has been at the Scorpions for four years and is an integral part of a defence that features young Casey talent.
Like every player Silvagni has ridden the highs and lows of VFL football but on Saturday will become only the 2nd current player behind Captain Kyle Matthews to reach the 50 game milestone.
Some VFL followers rate Silvagni as one of the best defenders in the VFL and after a breakout year in 2008, Silvagni was unlucky to miss the VFL team of the year.
In reflection yesterday Silvagni said there was some though times, but he is looking forward to a long career at VFL level.
“There were times three years ago when you think of giving it away, as is a ruthless industry, but that just builds your character, being dropped and brought up all the time is hard, but it has also made me mentally strong," he told the Scorpions website.
"I would have regretted it and at the end of the day, I want to play the highest level of football I can for as long as I can. Hopefully that can be AFL."
Scorpions football manager Craig Lees added:
“Alex is a wonderful competitor, he is very strong and he is hard to beat in a one on one contest. His continually working on his disposal and to be honest, there is no doubt in my mind he has the ability to play at the next level.”
