The AFLQ Darling Downs staff didn’t quite know what to expect when promoting NAB AFL Auskick in the Gatton and Laidley communities in 2009. With Rugby League and Soccer dominating the local sporting sector for some years, it was time the Lockyer District experienced the exciting fun of the NAB AFL Auskick program.
Sign on day arrived, and AFLQ staff were ambushed at both centres, with Gatton having well over 60 students lining up and down the highway at Laidley more then 70 pupils from the surrounding schools wanted to join up to the ever popular Auskick program.
Not only did both Auskick centres boast a combined total of over 130 participants but the parent involvement has been exceptional with many mums and dads joining in on the fun. Both students and parents have shared the experience of bombing the AFL staff in bomb the teacher and battling it out with a game of concentration with both centres now well into the heart of the 8 week program. Kids and parents are eagerly waiting the final week, where the Auskick Kids will take on the might of their Parents, in the excitement filled game, Kids verse the Parents.
One of the most pleasing outcomes from these auskick centres has been the interest shown by both students and parents to form a junior club in Laidley / Gatton for 2010+. Such has been the response that an expression of interest form was circulated to parents over the last 2 weeks of both programs with over 30 parents entering their interest to form a club in 2010+.
At this stage Laidley and Gatton will be invited to attend the end of year DDJ U8 and U10 carnival day where they will play against sides from Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. From this event we will be able to establish where to for future years for the Lockyer region but at this stage the future certainly looks promising.
