Round 6 kicked off Friday night with TEDAS and West End clubs doing battle under lights on Friday night.
The Under 16s game of the round was played between West End and TEDAS, who played a nail biter in Round 1 with West End getting up by 3 points. TEDAS were keen to reverse this earlier result and dominated the first quarter on the scoreboard, amassing 12 shots at goal to West Ends 5, leading 5-7-37 to 2-3-15 at the first change. The second quarter saw much of the same, as TEDAS kept West End goalless for the term, and added a further 4 goals to take a commanding lead into the long break of 50 points. To West Ends credit, in the third quarter, they added 4 straight goals to outscore TEDAS by a point, but were always going to struggle to get back into the game after TEDASs strong first half. The last quarter was a more even affair in regards to scoring opportunities, but TEDAS was the better team on the night winning by a comfrtable margin of 58 points. In other games, Glengarry got the points against a very spirited Combined Saints who took the game up to them, while Churchill and City Juniors both had good wins.
Police Boys and Southside was match of the round in the Under 14s and did not disappoint with a hard fought contest in wet and trying conditions. Southside got the jump on the opposition with a lot of play and if not for a lot of missed opportunities, would have had a much greater lead than the 3-7-25 to 1-0-6 at quarter time. Police Boys had more of the play in the second term and kept Southside to just 2 behinds, while they added 3 goals 5 behinds, and lead by 2 points at half time. The third quarter saw Southside dominate the scoreboard again, but with tough conditions, still managed more behinds than goals, and lead by 16 points at the final change. You would expect the trend of scoring to continue, but Southsides defence held strong and restricted Police Boys to just 5 behinds for the last quarter while they managed a solitary goal, and run out winners 7-15-57 to 5-10-40 in a terrific game of footy. In another close game, West End got the points over the previously undefeated TEDAS in a great game of footy under lights on Friday night 85 to 67, with Mark Nelson kicking 6 for the winners.
The Under 12s match of the Round was the previously undefeated teams of Combined Saints and Glengarry. Played at Glengarry in wet conditions, it was always going to be a close contest. Neither team was able to consolidate in the first quarter, as both backlines held firm and repelled many attacks from both sides, and at quarter time, Combined Saints lead 1-3-09 to 0-3-03. In the second quarter, the conditions made it tough to score with neither team able to create scoreboard pressure and the margin was a 2 goal lead to Combined Saints. In the third term, Combined Saints stepped up the attack with a few positional moves that created more scoring opportunities, resulting in 4 straight goals, but Glengarry kept attacking and added a couple of late goals for the quarter, and at the final change, Glengarry trailled 2-5-17 to Combined Saints 6-4-40. In the last quarter, Combined Saints kept Glengarry to one goal, whiles adding a further 2 goals 4 behinds and run out winners by 33 points. It was a great game of footy by the kids with both sides competing to the very end in cold and wet conditions and Combined Saints maintaining their unbeaten run going into next weeks break for the long weekend. In other games, City Juniors beat Cumberland Park by just 2 points, TEDAS accounted for West End, Churchill snuck home against a gallant Pax Hill, and Southside scored a win over Police Boys.
West End Under 10s kept their winning streak alive by posting their 6th win of the season over the previously undefeated TEDAS on Friday night. West End kept TEDAS scoreless in the first term, and a single point for the second, while they added 4 goals 5 behinds by half time to lead by 28 points which would prove to be a matchwinning lead. TEDAS managed a goal in the third term, but West End managed another 2, and then another 3 in the final term to run out convincing winners and be the only undefeated team in the Under 10 Competition at this stage of the season. The close game of the Round was between Police Boys and Southside, with Southside holding on to win by 7 points.
