Round 5 was played in ideal football conditions on both Friday under lights and on Saturday. There were may close games across all the age groups, including a draw in both the Under 16s and 12s.
Match of the Round in the Under 16s was the game between Glengarry (1st) and TEDAS (2nd). Glengarry was hoping to keep their unbeaten run going, but at the end of the first quarter TEDAS had other plans, as they lead 32 to 7 at the first change. In the second quarter, Glengarry used the ball better to create more scoring opprtunities, outscoring TEDAS 27 to 8, and trail by a goal at the long break. Both teams had 5 scoring shots for the third quarter and kicked 2 goals 3 behinds, and TEDAS maintaining a 6 point lead going into the last quarter. In the final term, neither team was able to kick away with limited opportunities, however Glengarry managed to kick 2 goals 3 to TEDAS's 1 goal 3 behinds, which had the scores deadlocked at 64 all at the final siren and Glengarry keeping top spot and their unbeaten run.
In the Under 14s, it was Pax Hill (2nd) versus Southside (5th) in the game of the round under lights Friday night. Pax Hill came out firing in the first quarter and dominated the scoring opportunities scoring 6 goals 2 behinds, to Southsides 1 goal 3 behinds, and lead by 29 points at the first change. Southside upped the ante in the second and outscored Pax Hill in this quarter, but not enogh to make in roads into their lead, and still trailled by 27 points at half time. Pax Hill regrouped and managed to kick more truly than their opposition, extending their lead to 38 points at the final change. Full credit to the kids from Southside, as the continued to plug away and never gave up and if not for their inaccuracy in front of goal, the result could have gone either way as they only had one less scoring shot. Pax Hill running out winners 86 to 50, and remain undefeated so far this season along with TEDAS.
West End (4th) visited Churchill (5th) in the Under 12s game of the Round on Saturday. Both teams started well, kicking truly but with neither able to gain a definite advatange the home team lead by 1 point at quarter time. In the second quarter, Churchill dominated on the scoreboard with 10 scoring shots that could have put West End out of the contest, but they could only manage 3 goals 7 behinds, but still hold a handy 38 to 18 lead at half time. The third quarter was a tight contest, with neither team able to trouble the scorerboard much, and Churchill still held a 14 point lead going into the last quarter. West End obviously received an inspiring address, as they came out and added 3 goals 4 to Churchill's 1 goal 2 and nearly steal a great win, but when the siren sounded at the end of the game, both teams were locked on 47 points a piece and the League had its first draw for the year. In another tight tussle, City Juniors (8th) took on TEDAS (3rd) and played some top footy, stretching TEDAS and actually leading by 5 points at the last change, but unfortunately could not hold on to record their second win of the year and went down by just 2 points in a great tussle.
Friday night produced the game of the Round in the Under 10s between Pax Hill (5th) and Southside (4th). The Southside boys must do a lot of goal kicking practice at training, as they opened up a 24 to 7 quarter time lead after kicking 4 goals straight for the term. The second quarter was a more even affair, and Southside held a 38 to 14 lead at the long break. Pax Hill outscored Southside in the third quarter by a goal to reduce the lead to just 3 goals at the last change. In the last quarter, Southside once again kicked straight and added a further 3 goals to Pax Hills 2 goals 2 behinds, and run out winners 63 to 41 in an entertaining game of Under 10 footy.
Games of the Round this week see TEDAS (3rd) and West End (4th) do battle in the Under 16s on Friday night, Southside (6th) v Police Boys (5th) in the Under 16s, Glengarry (2nd) v Combined Saints (1st) in the Unders 12 and both sides currently unbeaten, and in the Under 10s, West End (1st) v TEDAS (2nd) this Friday night , and both of these teams are undefeated after 5 rounds of footy.
