CBA Winter Club Basketball Results 2009

Checkers maintained its lead in the race for the Hoben Trophy when it comfortably beat High School Old Boys 91-62 in Men's Premier grade club basketball played in the QE11 Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Royals repulsed a strong last quarter rally from Kiwihoops University to beat the depleted students 80-71 while Atami slackened off in the final quarter to hold off new comer Gators 91-75. Joel Hart sunk a polished 28 points for Atami while Sam Paulin led the Gators efforts with 23. New comer Inga Solufuti splashed six three's to keep Gators in challenging distance.

No final is planned for the Hoben Trophy this season due to insufficient time while teams are also re-stricted to the use of Cougar players who average less than 15 minute court-time.

Last year's finalists, University and Wolverines, maintained their lead in the Patron's Trophy section of the Women's Premier grade with comfortable wins and will clash this Saturday in Round Robin play ahead of the Trophy final on 6^th June.

Wolverines powered away from the veteran Royals line-up to win 63-27 while University ran its bench in beating Halswell 65-33. Minties moved into third place when it repulsed a fourth-quarter rally to beat North Canterbury 54-49.

Atami, Gameface Wolf Pack and defending champion Placemakers Wolves share the lead in the Men's Division one competition with two wins apiece. Placemakers held of a determined challenge from the unpredictable Young Bloods to win 68-64 while Checkers recorded its first win, outpointing Gameface Wolverines 71-68.

Aranui Blue, Royals and the young Rangi Ruru selection share the lead in the Women's Division one, all remaining unbeaten with three straight wins apiece. The experienced Aranui Blue creamed Cashmere High 62-36 while Rangi Ruru held off a late recovery from Halswell to win 53-42.

The Shirley Boys High Under 23 team appears the emerging side to watch this season as it outpointed Aranui Academy in the game between the two bye teams 67-56. In Pool A, Cashmere High also looked strong as it beat Wolverines 55-47.

St Andrews College became the first Under 20 side to record a win over an Under 23 team when it beat High School Old Boys 78-73. Royals repulsed a strong challenge from the lively St Bedes Under 20 side 79-67. Checkers recorded its third straight win with a powerful 90-44 win over Middleton Grange Gators.

Early favourites to make the Elite Top 8 split after nine weeks in the Under 23 grade are Aranui Academy, Cashmere  and Checkers from Pool A and Atami, Shirley and Kiwihoops University from Pool B.

Aranui High, Cashmere Ch Ch Boys Blue and Middleton Grande White remained unbeaten after three rounds of the Boys Under 17 grade. Middleton Grange White repulsed a strong challenge form the new entrant Linwood/Royals 79-63, Aranui recorded a huge win over Hillmorton High while Cashmere had its work cut out before outpointing Shirley Boy's high 76-63.
