The Loy Yang Power TDJFL Round 3 kicked off on Friday night with the first ever night games played at the West End Complex under the new lights recently installed as part of the upgrade for the complex.
A large crowd witnessed games contested between the City Juniors and Churchill clubs
in all age groups. Each club was able to register two wins for the night. The night was a huge success based on the crowd, and the positive feedback from all the players, who canâÂÂt wait for their next opportunity to play under the lights.
The game of the round for Under 16s was the match between Pax Hill and Southside. Pax Hill was looking to win this game for Jesse Cooper, who notched up his 100th appearance for the club. In the first quarter, no team was able to gain the ascendancy, but during the second, Southside kicked away to lead by 17 points at the long break. Southside continued to take the ball forward, but were inaccurate and could have been further than 27 points at the final change. In the last quarter, Pax Hill never gave up and dominated the scoring opportunities, but managed to kick 2 goals 9 behinds, going down by 14 points and Southside recording their first win for the season.
In the Under 14s, Cumberland Park and Glengarry were looking for their first win of the season. Cumberland park had the bulk of the scoring opportunities for the match, but were unable to convert into majors which kept Glengarry in the match. Glengarry lead at halftime 27 to 24, but in the third quarter, Cumberland Park kicked 2 goals 6 behinds to GlengarryâÂÂs solitary goal, and lead by 9 points. The last quarter was a very tight affair, with neither team able to add any majors, and Cumberland Park able to hold on and record their first win for the 2009 season by 10 points.
City Juniors and Churchill played the match of the round in the Under 12s on Friday night. With probably nearly all players never having experienced night footy themselves, it was going to be a good challenge for them. City Juniors had their kicking boots on in the first quarter, as they managed to score 3 goals to ChurchillâÂÂs 1 goal 3 behinds and lead at the first break. Churchill outscored City Juniors in the second term by a goal, with the lead being only 3 points at half time. The third quarter was very tight, with neither team being able to get past the respective backlines, and at the final change, City Juniors lead by 4 points. In the last quarter, it was very much the same as the previous three, with neither side able to kick away. In the end, Churchill kicked 2 goals to 1 in the last quarter and get up and win by 2 points in a good, even game of junior footy played with great spirit.
In the Under 10s, Glengarry won their first game of the season with a nail biting 1 point win over Cumberland Park. In somewhat windy conditions, all bar 1 goal was scored at one end which made the game very interesting. Glengarry kicked with the wind in the first quarter and managed to score 5 goals 2 to no score. In the second, Cumberland Park, with the wind, added 4 goals 2 to no score, and trail by 6 points at half time. In the third quarter, Cumberland Park managed to kick a goal against the tide, but Glengarry still managed to kick 3 goals 5, and lead by 23 points at the last change. Cumberland Park kept Glengarry scoreless for the quarter, only managed to kick 3 goals 4, and go down 55 to 54 in a fantastic game of underage footy.
