U/16 Australia Post AFL Queensland Country Championships
Over the weekend of April 18-20 AFL Capricornia hosted the U/16 Australia Post AFL Queensland Country Championships at Stenlake Park, North Rockhampton. The carnival played over 3 days saw some high quality football with some aspiring talent coming through the Country ranks. The aim of the carnival was to showcase the best 23 players from all 7 regions in the aim to earn a spot on the Country Queensland Kookaburras list to play at Zillmere in two weeks time at the state championships.
Capricornia were represented well with a spread from 5 of the 6 clubs across the league and although not chalking up too many wins still showed a lot of determination and hardness at the footy. A big thank you must go out to the coaching staff Dale Sparkman and Lachlan Moore who helped the boys throughout the carnival and after 2 days of the boys gelling together all the team plans and game plays fell into place with the boys defeating Darling Downs to finish 6th overall.
Key players throughout the carnival were Leigh Cossens, Aiden Hearne, Cameron O'Grady, Rusty-James Parnaby, Jamie Cunninghame and the rest of the boys all did the part in ensuring that they represented AFL Capricornia to the best of their abilities and have done themselves and our region proud.
In what proved to be a more then successful carnival we were lucky enough to have Leigh Cossens from the Yeppoon Swans named in the Country Kookaburras side and will join the rest of the team in Brisbane in two weeks time at the state champs.
The overall winner of the carnival was the Cape Yorke Crusaders who demonstrated a fast paced game which involved playing on at all costs and showcased the indigenous flare which is unique to these boys. Crusaders went through undefeated and celebrated in style in front of the Glenmore Canteen showcasing some brilliant Australian culture and dancing to the crowd watching.
We must give a big thank you to all the billeting families who took in not only our boys but those from Townsville, to the Yeppoon Active Recreation Centre for hosting 4 teams, to the Glenmore Bulls Football Club for their commitment to the weekend preparing lunches and ensuring the ground was fantastic and giving up their time (some missing out on local fixtures). One final mention must go to our sponsor Paul Archer and the Good Guys for their on going support of junior football in the Capricornia Region.
Anyone else that I have failed to mention thank you for your support of developing Aussie Rules football in the Capricornia Region.
Dont forget to check out the photo Gallary.
