LOCAL FOOTBALL CLUB TACKLES MENS HEALTH
The East Brighton Football Club has joined forces with Foundation 49 for season 2009. (www.49.com.au)
Foundation 49 is a not-for profit, mens' health promotion organisation within Cabrini Health that is all about, well, men, and their health, or potentially, lack of it!
Men's health is an issue. Men make up 49% of the population, and the team at Foundation 49 is determined to reduce the number of men dying prematurely. Whilst there is growing community awareness around issues such as smoking, mental health, diabetes and substance abuse, there appears to be a real need to start the education process earlier than what may be considered necessary for 'blokes'. Issues such as alcohol consumption, drug abuse, domestic violence, sexually transmitted diseases, treatment and respect of women, diet and other are topical for all boys, young men and adults.
When you look at the average demographics of a football club - juniors, parents, reserves, seniors, supporters - it's is a good place to start!
This is the first time a partnership of this type has been forged in community football.
This new alliance is a positive step for Community Football in general. All too often football clubs receive publicity for the wrong reasons, and as such, The East Brighton Football Club is pioneering a greater awareness of all factors that may affect the health of men by teaming up with Foundation 49.
On Sunday 21 June this year, the inaugural Foundation 49 Cup will be played for between the East Brighton and St Paul's football clubs, a game expected to coincide with a carnival for locals and footy fans from communities both locally and afar.
In 2009, the East Brighton Football Club (Vampires) is seeking several levels of sponsorship in 2009 that will:
- Ensure on-going on-field success to the EBFC
- Provide returns to Foundation 49 for continued support of Mens' Health
- Ensure sustainability of a 60 year + community sporting club that provides an outlet for the sporting prowess of hundreds of youngsters.
With over 400 juniors, their families as well as the senior players, their connections and supporters, prospective sponsors can expect a wide reach when it comes to generating awareness of their products and services.
Looking to the future, a key priority is the development of an Under 18 team for season 2010 season. This, combined with a youth development strategy to nurture and retain as many junior footballers as possible will drive the long term success and viability of the footy club.
Ever played footy at East Brighton? In late 2008, the Vampire Past Players & Officials Association (VPPA) was launched. VPPA President Michael Rogers states, "You could have played 1 game in the U/12's twenty years ago, 300 senior games or been a team manager, it doesn't matter, everyone's welcome".
With all of the off-field activity well and truly in motion, the Vampires are still recruiting players for Senior & Reserve sides. Former Premiership Coach, Tony Cook has been appointed Reserves Coach for 2009. For anyone interested in coming down to training for the first time, or even resurrecting their careers at the Vampires, please contact Steve Hill on 0412 -015-008. Training is at Hurlingham Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.00pm.
