New Box Hill coach Brendan Bolton was full of praise for his players following their 16-point triumph over the Northern Bullants.
Bolton was encouraged by his side's ability to run the ball and knew his side would have the legs to run out the game, despite the warm autumn conditions.
"I knew over the pre-season our preparation was good - we've had six months together so I knew we would have the run - but we really had to manage well our rotations," Bolton told 3WBC 94.1FM after the match.
"I thought in the first half we didn't do that as well as the second half. It was a bit of a concern at hlaf-time but we got them right in the second half."
Bolton also commender Hawk backman Brad Neil, who was one of the best afield.
"Neily's an absolute competitor, there's no doubt about that. He will fight to the death down there," Bolton said of his gutsy defender.
"It was good to see him get on the end of a few balls and give us some run and carry. Over the pre-season he has latched onto his man a little but it was good to see today he provided us with some carry and run."
Box Hill's leaders - co-captains Lukas Markovic and Steve Kenna - stood tall when the match demanded, Bolton said.
"That's why they're chosen - two quality blokes," Bolton enthused.
"Stevie Kenna provided a lot of run and carry though the midfield and Markovic chopped out really well in defence and applied some body at some really good times I thought."
