AFL Victoria's 2009 Youth Girls season will kick off this Saturday at Casey Fields in Cranbourne. The oldest Youth Girls competition in the program, the South East Footy-Pak Cup's sixth season will feature seven teams from Melbourne's south eastern region. Existing teams from Hallam, Berwick, Narre Warren, Narre South, Cranbourne and Noble Park will be joined by the Dandenong Saints.
The dominance enjoyed by Hallam and Berwick last year looks to have been wound back, as many of their key players have graduated to the senior women's ranks in the Victorian Women's Football League. Noble Park and Narre South look to be the early improvers, whilst at Narre Warren there's been a change of coach and an influx of new players. Last year's newcomers, Cranbourne, were 2008's fast finishers and hope to pick up where they left off.
AFL Victoria's Youth Girls program will feature an extra two competitions in 2009. Geelong and eastern Melbourne competitions will each feature four teams, whilst the northern competition is flourishing with seven teams. Bendigo has finally been able to grow to include a fourth team (a second North Bendigo team) and the western competition will be the largest competition in remaining at eight teams. Overall, it is expected that around seven hundred girls will compete in the Youth Girls program every weekend in 2009.
