For the first time round one will be split over 2 weeks, with the other 2 games being Muswellbrook Cats v Gunnedah Bulldogs in Muswellbrook, and New England Nomad v Tamworth Swansin Armidale on the 2nd May.
The Tamworth Australian Football League has grown from a four team competition in 1997, to a seven team regional competition in 2009. Clubs in the League are the Gunnedah Bulldogs, Inverell Saints, Muswellbrook Cats, New England Nomads (Armidale), Narrabri Eagles, Tamworth Kangaroos and Tamworth Swans. The Narrabri Eagles will be in hiatus for 2009 due to the continuing effects of the drought.
Tamworth Australian Football League President, Darrell Benfield, said, "the 2009 season is shaping up to be our best year ever, with all clubs fielding very strong teams.""We are also very pleased to announce that we have secured a new naming rights sponsor to support our local competition, this being Country Energy.""We will know be known as the Country Energy Tamworth Australian Football League, and we couldn't be happier."
As part of the arrangement between the Tamworth Australian Football League and Country Energy a new spectator competition will be incorporated into the main competition. This will be known as the Country Energy Longest Kick Competition, and as the name suggests will be a competition to see who can kick the furtherest. This competition will be run at half time in each game, with the winners having the opportunity to the semi-finals and a grand final in conjunction with the main competition. Country Energy will be providing prizes to all winners.
Country Energy's Regional General Manager, Matt Patterson, said "we are really excited to be part of this competition, in particular it appealed because it is run accross a number of regional centres in the New England and North West.""We Live Here Too, and this is one of the many ways we give back to, and support, local communities.""I encourage the community to get behind their local team, and come along and watch a game or two."
Country Energy Tamworth Australian Football League President, Darrell Benfield, also announced that Gerry Griffiths Consulting Engineers has also come onboard as a sponsor in 2009 and thanked them for their support.
Benfield also welcomed back Southern Cross Ten as a partner of the Country Energy Tamworth Australian Football League and announced that they will again sponsor the 'Southern Cross Ten Rising Star award" in 2009.
