NINETY-eight goals from one netballer is a lot of little strokes on a scoresheet.
So many little strokes that the scorers of Saturday's Merrivale and Deakin University clash found it difficult to tally them all up.
Because of that, spectators, officials and players were unaware how many goals Tiger Narelle Welsh was shooting.
Even Welsh herself had no clue she was approaching three figures in the season opener, with her tally believed to be a record.
"The scorers were having trouble adding up the goals in the break so I don't think anyone really knew how many I had got until after the game," she said.
"It was a bit of a shock to find out because I thought (goal attack) Haley (Kelson) got a lot more than she did."
Kelson contributed 19 to Merrivale's total of 117 while the Sharks managed 14.
Deakin was pressed to find a defender to match Welsh's height.
"(My opponent) was fairly short, which helped," she said.
With quarters of Warrnambool and District Football Netball League (WDFNL) senior netball matches extended to 15 minutes this season, the shooter scored on average every 36.8 seconds.
"I didn't feel like I always had the ball in my hands though," she said.
"But then there were a lot of times when I thought the defenders hadn't seen much of the ball for a while."
The reigning premier contained Deakin to four goals in the opening and last terms and three goals in quarters two and three.
The majority of Welsh's attempts were from under the ring, with the shooter saying her accuracy was high.
"I was surprised because it hasn't been too good lately," she said.
"I think I only missed eight or so.
"One of those I missed right before the siren."
She said she wasn't irritated by the fact she was just two goals shy of a century.
"I was pretty happy to just get that many," she said.
"It was just a good team effort."
WDFNL general manager Dianne Membery said the league no longer kept shooting records because of inaccuracy but that she believed Welsh's round one effort was arguably the most goals a player had scored in a single game. Netball Victoria does not keep shooting records either.
