THE PLAYER VOTED THE BEST & FAIREST OF THE LEAGUE FOR THE SEASON.
AFL Mount Isa tonight celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Cargill Medal for the Best & Fairest player of the 2007 season. The function will take place at the Buchanan Park function room with the man that got AFL going in 1967 John Cargill returning to the city. With nearly 200 people booked for this function a huge contingent of previous Cargill Medallists, Presidents & players from the late sixties through to the current day are keen to celebrate this special event. Some of the past Medallists attending are Laurie Patterson-1968, Ian Doolan-1974, Kim Stahl 1976,1978 & 1980,Steve Trindle-1981,Paul White-1992, Alex Gallaher-1997 & 1998,Peter Wilson-2002, Simon Pope-2004,Adrian Williams-2005 & Calvin Hockley-2006. There will be plenty of reminiscing of the old times & a lot of goals kicked on the night.
Moving onto the Best & Fairest Count, the Cargill Medal is voted by the umpires of each game. Three votes are allocated for the best on field, two votes for the next & one vote for the third best player. These are sealed in an envelope & are not opened until today. Any player who has been suspended during the fixture season is ineligible to win the Cargill Medal. The following players from their respective clubs are expected to poll well.
Lake Nash Bushies-Mitchell Mahoney, Jeremiah Percey & Amos Teague.
Buffaloes-Dan Dreier, Luke Severi & Jason Eaton
Lake Nash Bats- Adrian Williams, Craig Philomac & Desmond Rusty.
Tigers-Calvin Hockley, Johney Hockley & Brian Menz
Rovers- Jim Faulkner, Clinton Astenbury & Tim Raggott.
All these players have had sensational seasons, but remember the umpires are doing the votes, not the so called experts. With the competition so close it's anybody's guess who will win the 40th Cargill Medal but whoever it is it will not be a night he will ever forget surrounded by some of the greats in the last 40 years.
