Spirit of the Game

Successful coaches of the future will be those who educate players to develop their individual and team skills in accordance with the laws.

Coaches are very influential role models for their teams on match day. They set the example through their words and actions. It is important that coaches and umpires develop a responsible and professional approach for the benefit of the game.

Coaches behaviour towards umpires will be reflected in their players behaviour.

A positive approach to umpiring can also provide a performance advantage in terms of coach and player focus. A sound knowledge of the rules and the spirit of the laws will also allow coaches and their teams to develop a sound tactical approach which will be to their advantage.

The attached brochure explains the Spirit of the Laws, which guides umpires in their decision making processes in regard to key rules such as those related to contests for the ball, diving on the ball, tackling, ruck contest and advantage plays.
