Ten years ago, women's football was a lot different compared to today. It was firstly played on half fields sideways on AFL fields; posts were made of PVC poles. There were only 10 players maximum allowed on the reduced sized fields. It was an accumulation of a labour of love of the early committee that allowed SWAFL to get up and running.
In the very first round of games at W.H.Wagener Oval - Ashbury, Wests played Glebe (now Balmain Dockers) with Wests winning 8.11.54 to Glebe's 3.4.22. In the second game Sydney University 12.16.88 defeated Easts 10.4.64.
The photo attached shows a photo from 2000 (courtesy L.Worthy) of two games being run simultaneously at Monarch Oval, Macquarie Fields. Major congratulations to two players who have played
continuously
since the foundation of the league - Michaela Ekman (Wests) and Gianna Abbonizio (Sydney University). We pay tribute to all the players, umpires and coaches/administrators who have participated in 10 years of football.
