A Mackay / Townsville Grand Final delivered a thrilling end to the 2009 AFL Mackay pre-season carnival last Saturday at Airlie Beach.
In glorious conditions, AFL Townsville’s Hermit Park Tigers took out the competition over AFL Mackay 2008 runners-up Eastern Swans.
Last year’s winners, the North Mackay Saints, failed to defend their title, fiishing the day at the bottom of the table in the round of pool matches.
The Eastern Swans could prove to be the benchmark of the 2009 Manpower AFL Mackay premiership season, putting on an impressive performance. The Swans snared an early advantage over the Whitsunday Sea-Eagles to sneak away with a win through a super-goal on the full time siren.
The Whitsunday Sea-Eagles showed ominous signs for the season ahead, with a gutsy display in the pool round of matches to finish with an impressive for and against tally.
The surprise packets of the competition were the Under 18 Mackay Crows representative team, who were outstanding in their pool round of matches against Townsville’s 2008 premiers University Hawks, and Rockhampton’s Brothers. The Crows ultimately went down to the eventual champions in a closely fought contest.
The four-hundred plus spectators in attendance willed the final two teams on, but through superior skills and discipline 2007 winners, Hermit Park drove home the advantage for a closely fought 5 point win to reclaim the Mackay/Whitsunday Shield.
