Despite all the fears that a poor crowd would roll up to Deakin Reserve last Friday night after the negative publicity surrounding Richmond's lack of A Graders turning up, despite the recession, the bush fires and drought, Collingwood and Essendon on t.v., the Aussies playing South Africa in Durban, a very healthy crowd turned out to watch the Tiger cubs and St Kilda go head to head. Certainly not the game of the year so far (it was a practice game remember!) but a night of excitement for the fans to see the rookies and new recruits strut their stuff. And how good was it for the kids to get up close and personal to the stars. Congratulations to John O'DONOGHUE, our VCFL Area Manager for his organisational abilities and co-ordination. We are very fortunate to have someone like John calling the shots and having the terrific team headed by Mark "Chops" LAMBOURNE and Brendan GOSSTRAY at the City of Greater Shepparton. Don KILGOUR and his Deakin Reserve Committee of Management were excellent again. Both the Shepparton and Shepparton United clubs were again outstanding in the catering. It is very heartening to hear all positive comments from the Richmond and St Kilda clubs about the ground itself, the lighting and facilities. Our G.V. Umpires were again very professional in the way they carried out their duties in looking after the umpires and the coaching staff. Likewise, the volunteer Security chaps from CoGS were terrific. All in all, a wonderful event, a terrific night with probably a good 6,500 to 7,000 people in attendance without a major hiccup. Well Done to all concerned....
P.S. St Kilda won 16.13.109 to Richmond 9.3.57
