First game up for the 35 Mixed grade was the 3rd and 4th ranked teams (Wanganui & Wellington Gold) playing off for a spot in the play-off game for the finals.
Wellington Gold, who have struggled all weekend for cohesion, finally found their straps and took the game out 5-2.
Next up was the main semi-final between Wellington Black (1st ranked) and Canterbury.
Wellington Black have been a class above the rest of the teams all weekend, but today was about finals Touch and Canterbury came out fighting, and only succumbed to strong Wellington finish in the dying minutes. Wellington Black taking the game 6-5 and securing the first spot into the grand final
The play-off game was a one-sided affair with the strong Canterbury team ripping apart the weaker Wellington Gold team. Final score 10-2
In the play-off for 3rd and 4th Wellington Gold, in their third game of the day, drew on their experience of their earlier games and came out the victors against Wanganui 4-3
In the grand final between Wellington Black and Canterbury, Wellington Black showed that the morning’s close game between these two sides was just a slow start to a long day, and their dominance from the round-robin games came back.
Canterbury fought hard, but couldn’t sustain their defence from the relentless attacks from the Wellington Black team. Final Score 10-6
Sporting black arm bands during the day, the Wellington Black team dedicated their grand final win to their player James Marsh, who had a death in his family during the tournament, but came back to play in the final for his team-mates, and was inspirational during the game
