In the much anticipated matchup between the two North Island rivals it was immediately clear that this was going to be a highly competitive, hard fought battle. Wellington however made the early running when (n 1) slid over for the first score.
Auckland however came back in the best way possible, after a sustained period of attack playmaker (n1) linked up to send (n14 )in for the equalising score. Auckland then followed this up with a well constructed score to take the lead into half time. Again (n1) was instrumental in constructing the score, drawing the defence on to him before slipping a neat pass to supporting teammate (N8).
The second half continued to be a titanic battle as possession changed hands several times as the defences of both sides were unfaltering. It was Wellington that broke the deadlock with a brilliant snipe from dummy half that was well finished by (n6) sliding in for the equalizing score.
After a number of dives at the line being met with some desperate defence Auckland’s continued pressure finally led to a score that seemed to have sealed the win. Wellington however would not lie down and seconds before the hooter sounded it was another snipe form dummy half that led to a touchdown for (N8) to seal a closely contested draw.
