Former North Ballarat Rebel Adam Goodes is one of 10 TAC Cup products to captain an AFL club in 2009.
Sydney today appointed Goodes a co-captain alongside last year's leaders Craig Bolton and Brett Kirk.
He joins Jonathon Brown (Geelong Falcons/Brisbane), Chris Judd (Sandringham Dragons/Carlton), Nick Maxwell (Geelong Falcons/Collingwood), Matthew Lloyd (Western Jets/Essendon), Sam Mitchell (Eastern Ranges/Hawthorn), James McDonald (North Ballarat Rebels/Melbourne), Brent Harvey (Northern Knights/North Melbourne), Chris Newman (Dandenong Stingrays/Richmond) and Brad Johnson (Western Jets/Western Bulldogs) as TAC Cup graduates to lead an AFL side for season 2009.
Sydney coach Paul Roos said Goodes deserved the honour.
“Adam Goodes has been in the leadership group and gained the respect of his peers and he deserves the honour of captaining the Club alongside Craig Bolton and Brett Kirk," Roos said.
“We are very confident Adam will carry on in the fine tradition of some of the past great captains and will ultimately leave his own legacy at the football club.”
Goodes said it was a great honour and responsibility to be named a captain of the Sydney Swans.
“It is something I have always wanted to achieve since being in the leadership group," Goodes said.
“We have had fantastic leaders in the past and present, and to be amongst this group is just a great honour.
“It is also great to be one of three, to have the experience of Craig and Brett alongside me, and past captains Leo (Barry) and Barry (Hall) still around to help develop my leadership qualities.”
