Ex-Murray Bushranger David Mundy has been elevated to Fremantle's highest onfield office.
Mundy will captain Freo in Sunday's NAB Cup match against Richmond in Matthew Pavlich's absence.
Dockers assistant coach Barry Mitchell said the club was trying to unearth a new generation of leaders.
"[Mundy] gets his chance this week. He's been really impressive in the pre-season. I think his leadership is going to continue to improve," Mitchell told afl.com.au
"It has to, because we've lost some experience players."
Mundy said it was a privilege to be given the responsibility to captain the team on Sunday.
“Obviously it’s an honour to captain the side but it is also a great opportunity to experience the demands and responsibility of the job,” he said.
Mundy was the 59th Bushranger drafted onto an AFL list. He was selected by the Fremantle Football Club with the 20th pick at the 2003 National Draft.
Mundy, who hails from Seymour, was the Bushrangers best player in its 2003 finals campaign.
