The Northern Bullants kicked off 2009 with an internal hit-out at Visy Park last Friday.
Bullants coach David Teague cast an eye over a fresh crop of youngsters keen to make the final VFL squad of 45.
With a squad of more than 60 players in action, the match proved competitive with new assistant coach Martin Pike's team taking the match by four goals.
According to www.northernbullants.com.au, players to impress included:
Ryan Gale: The West Australian, having been playing for Claremont in the WAFL, was handy roaming across half-forward taking a number of telling marks. A good sized player, Gale will certainly be a handy tall utility.
Ahmed Saad: Perhaps the most impressive was this Roxburgh Park youngster who has only played football for a few years. The small forward was ultra-lively around goal and showed the composure of an experienced footballer.
Wes Bilney: Wes will not have to go far for advice if he makes it onto the Bullants list as cousin Eddie Betts will be around Visy Park. Like Saad, Bilney is a livewire around goal and has a bag of tricks up his sleeve. From West Adelaide.
Carl Groth: Originally from Wangaratta, this strongly built midfielder has been playing for NFL club Lalor. Showed tenacity at the contest and looks a likely type.
Shaun Austin: Originally from Canberra, Austin has done two previous pre-seasons with the Northern Bullants before deciding to play at Greensborough in the NFL. Looking fitter than in the past, it appears the strong on-baller is keen to test himself at the VFL level.
Others to show signs of improvement was key defender Rohan Barraclough and rover Adrian Totino, who has bulked-up over pre season.
