Weekly Wrap - Tupu success, JTF reps, Westlake at Worlds

Our Harbour Breeze team are the inaugural Tupu League national champions after completing an undefeated season.

At the Finals Weekend in Tauranga the Breeze won all five games culminating in a 95-89 Grand Final victory over the hosts Tauranga City Coasters.

In addition to the team’s success both Azure Anderson and Bailey Flavell were named to the Tournament All-Star Five with Bailey receiving the added accolade of being named the MVP.

New Zealand U18 Women

The Junior Tall Ferns, with Harbour reps Rebecca Moors and Zenthia Stowers in their lineup, began their FIBA U18 Asia Cup campaign against Japan on Monday in Shenzhen, China. Unfortunately New Zealand went down 84-47 in their tournament opener.

World High School Championships

The Westlake Girls High School Premier team are in Macao, China for the World High School Championships and opened their campaign with a 100-26 win against a Chilean school team. Imani Rasmussen (23pts), Charlotte Mawston (18pts), Lucy Dawson (12pts) and Emma Schroeder (11pts) were the leading scorers. 

Sal’s National Basketball League 

Charlie Dalton scored an NBL best 19 points as Auckland Tuatara beat Otago Nuggets 102-70 at Eventfinda Stadium last Wednesday night.

In addition Chris McIntosh scored 9 points while Rob Loe filled the stats line with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks.

That being the final regular season home game the next opportunity to see the Tuatara is on Saturday, June 29 when they meet the Franklin Bulls in Pukekohe in the second 06 local derby of the season. 

The Rapid League game begins at 6.30pm with the NBL encounter commencing at 7.30pm.

Brayden Inger scored 12 points as Southland Sharks secured a 93-82 victory against Tauranga Whai on Friday night.

Fourty-eight hours later the Whai bounced back from that loss by winning the second half of the Southern Swing against Otago Nuggets (66-59) in Dunedin with Kruz Perrott-Hunt scoring 12 points. 

James Moors scored 15 points for Manawatu Jets as they went down 104-77 against the Nelson Giants in Palmerston North.

Overseas Professional Players

In the Australian NBL1 South League Keilor Thunder won 79-65 at Bendigo Braves. 

Akiene-Tera Reed threatened a triple-double as she posted 18 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Penina Davidson also had an impressive stats line as she accumulated 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks and a steal in the win.
