Weekly Wrap – U20 Nationals, Sal’s NBL and overseas news.

The Foot Locker U20 National Championships wrapped up in Rangiora on Monday. 

Harbour U20 Men claimed bronze with a 97-62 win over Nelson in the 3rd/4th play-off game. Joel Brown top scored with 17 points while Hadi Alshami (14 points), Chris Wyllie (12pts) and Josh Batty (11pts) also scored double figures.

Meanwhile Gabriel Ames (7.4ppg) and Bailey Smith (6.6ppg) were the leading scorers for the Harbour B Men’s team.

Our U19 Women’s team had to settle for fourth place after going down 71-53 to Waikato in the 3rd/4th play-off game. Bailey Flavell led the scoring effort with 15 points, Ash Tuumaialu scored 12 and Maia Fowler 7.

Individual honours went the way of Bailey Flavell and Chris Wyllie. Bailey was named to the Women’s All-Star Five after leading the scoring in the Women’s Tournament averaging 25.3ppg. Chris was the epitome of consistency at both ends of the floor – he averaged 10.7ppg making 21 in the quarter-final win against Hawkes Bay. 

Sal’s National Basketball League.

League leaders Auckland Tuatara beat Wellington Saints 106-99 in a high quality encounter at Eventfinda Stadium on Saturday night with Corey Webster scoring 29 points. Rob Loe added 14 points and Charlie Dalton a valuable 10 points in the win.

The next opportunity to see the Tuatara is this Sunday, June 9 when the Canterbury Rams are the visitors at Eventfinda Stadium.

The Rapid League game begins at 2.00pm with the NBL encounter commencing at 3.00pm.

Dan Fotu had 17 points and 8 rebounds as the Nelson Giants slipped up at home going down to the Hawkes Bay Hawks 89-84.

Kruz Perrott-Hunt scored 14 points and Denhym Brooke 10 as Tauranga Whai were beaten 102-90 by Wellington Saints in Tauranga on Wednesday.

Also suffering a home defeat were the Manawatu Jets going down to the Otago Nuggets 99-88. James Moors scored 16 points in the loss and Liam Judd 13.

Overseas Professional Players

In Australian NBL1 South Akiene-Tera Reed  scored 24 points for the second game running as Keilor Thunder beat Melbourne Tigers 77-70. Penina Davidson also had an outstanding game amassing 20 points and 15 rebounds in the win. The Thunder sit atop the NBL1 South ladder with a 13-1 record.

In NBL1 West Olivia Berry scored 22 points for Kalamunda Eastern Suns as they were beaten 116-84 by Warwick Senators. Olivia added 6 rebounds whilst Ella Fotu had 9 points and 5 assists.

Yanni Wetzell had 8 points and 8 rebounds as ALBA Berlin squared the ledger at 1-1 in their German League semi-final series against Chemnitz. Having lost game one 95-82 ALBA convincingly won the second encounter 86-64.
