Weekly Wrap - Bailey Balling and much more
It’s not often we begin our Weekly Wrap with high school news but in this instance it is fitting that we do. In an extraordinary display Bailey Flavell scored a career high 68 points for Takapuna Grammar School in their 100-79 win at Rangitoto College on Friday night. Bailey’s stunning performance keeps Takapuna Grammar inside the top four of the Auckland Secondary Schools Girls Premier Grade.
Not dwelling too long on her impressive display Bailey headed to Pukekohe on Saturday for the last of the Women’s Tupu League regional qualifiers. The Tupu League has replaced the D League as the second tier women’s programme underpinning the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa League.
The Breeze have been unbeaten in their eight qualification games and will now begin preparation for Tupu Finals Weekend which will be held in Tauranga from June 21-23.
In Pukekohe on Saturday the Breeze, with former Tall Fern Brooke Blair scoring 14 points , Bailey Flavell 13 and Azure Anderson 12 defeated Auckland Dream 76-64

Congratulations to Akiene Tera-Reed who has been named to the 2degrees Tall Ferns Select Team set to travel to Tokyo to face Japan on July 4th and 6th – currently the ninth-ranked Women’s team in the world.

Four former Harbour players were amongst the starters as Manawatu Jets took on Tauranga Whai in Palmerston North on Sunday – Liam Judd (10 points) and James Moors (17 points and 14 rebounds) for the Jets and Kruz Perrott-Hunt and Denhym Brooke for the Whai who held on for a 77-75 victory. In addition Jets forward Jackson Stent and Whai guards Jett Thompson, Zion Anderson and Harlan Roudon are also former Harbour reps.
Earlier in the week Perrott-Hunt scored 20 points and Jett Thompson 13 as the Whai fell to an 86-72 home defeat to Canterbury Rams.
Top of the table Auckland Tuatara took care of business at Eventfinda Stadium on Friday night beating Nelson Giants 99-81. Rob Loe had a customary double-double (21 points and 13 rebounds) while Corey Webster contributed a dozen points.
With his first basket of the game Rob became the first player to score 1,000 points for the Tuatara.
After a quiet game against the Tuatara Giants forward Dan Fotu played a big part in the Nelson Giants upsetting the Franklin Bulls 105-95 in Pukekohe on Sunday. On 9 from 11 shooting Dan tallied a valuable 22 points.
Brayden Inger also scored 22 points - a season high - as Southland Sharks registered their first victory of the season winning the southern stoush against the Otago Nuggets 99-81.
The next opportunity to see the Tuatara is this Saturday, June 1 when there is a blockbuster matchup with Wellington Saints at Eventfinda Stadium.
The Rapid League game begins at 6.30pm with the NBL encounter commencing at 7.30pm.
Oversees Professional Players
In Australian NBL1 South Akiene-Tera Reed celebrated her naming to the Tall Ferns team by scoring 24 points as Keilor Thunder beat Kilsyth Cobras 94-59. Penina Davidson was also prominent with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in the win.
In NBL1 West Olivia Berry shone for Kalamunda Eastern Suns as they beat Southwest Slammers 94-67. Olivia top scored with 24 points and also had 7 rebounds, 5 assists and a couple of steals. Ella Fotu, after a flying visit to Auckland for her university graduation ceremony, filed a stats line of 11 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals for the Suns.
Yanni Wetzell and ALBA Berlin have completed a 3-0 sweep of Bonn in the German League quarter-final series and will now face Chemnitz in the semi-final series beginning midweek. Yanni posted almost identical stats in all three games – 7 points and 5 rebounds twice and 7 points and 3 rebounds on the other occasion.
