Weekly Wrap - High School and Pro Ranks news
In this week’s Wrap we take a look at our former Harbour reps playing professionally at home and overseas. Firstly though we have an update on some major high school results.
There was good news and bad news this week concerning the status of Rangitoto College senior basketball teams teams in 2024.
The promotion-relegation games to decide the make-up of the Boy’s and Girl’s Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Grades were played last Friday night.
Unfortunately the Rangitoto Boys’ team were beaten on the buzzer 75-73 by Mt Roskill Grammar School.
Rangitoto 73 – Max Mudford 26, Michael Ropotini 21, William Cheng 17
Mt Roskill 75 – Haisem Osman 16, Alfred Kerr 15, Wai Tonga 14
There was much better news for Rangitoto College Girl’s as they won a one-sided game against Baradene College 121-23.
Rangitoto 121 – Sienna Maurice 22, Kyree Rakena 20, Maddie Skelton 18, Eva Veale 14, Mela Andrews 13, Zoe Magiera 9
Baradene 23 – Odile Dolan 9
The Premier Grade competition begins after the April school holidays with two boys teams competing and four girls teams.
Boy’s Prems – Rosmini College and Westlake Boys High School
Girl’s Prems – Northcote College, Rangitoto College, Takapuna Grammar School and national champions Westlake Girls High School.
Given there are eight teams in each grade that means Harbour schools make up 50% of the Girl’s Premier competition.
Oversees Professional Players
Tochigi Brex completed the double over Akita Northern Happinets with 86-51 and 85-82 victories – that’s now 20 consecutive win and an overall record of 43-7 for Brex in the Japanese League. Over the two games Isaac Fotu (pictured) shot a combined 16 from 20 for 18 points and 23 in a productive weekend.
Yanni Wetzell enjoyed one of his highest scoring games of the season as ALBA Berlin beat Ludwigsburg 100-91 in the German League. The former Westlake Boys High and Harbour forward scored 18 points on 8 from 12 shooting.
Sam Mennenga scored 11 points as Karditsas went down 91-70 to Maroussi in the Greek League.
James Moors made it seven double figure outings on the trot as he tallied 18 points on 7 from 11 shooting as Leeuwarden lost 103-74 to Aaist in Dutch League play.
Sal’s National Basketball League – Round 2 review.
Auckland Tuatara bounced back from an opening round loss to the Wellington Saints with wins against Taranaki Airs (84-77) and Tauranga Whai (92-72).
Corey Webster scored 27 points and Rob Loe 22 in the home win against the Airs last Thursday.
Two days later, in Tauranga, the pair had 22 points and 16 respectively against the Whai. Reuben Fitzgerald scored 10 points while U19 Harbour rep Jameer Reed stepped on court late in the game for his NBL debut.
For the Whai Kruz Perrott-Hunt scored 15 points and Jayden Boucher 2 points.
After missing the opening round Tai Webster scored 20 points and dished 6 assists as the Otago Nuggets protected home court with a 112-103 victory against Manawatu.
Dan Fotu continued his fine start to the season with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds as Nelson Giants pushed Wellington Saints all the way before going down 84-75.
In Invercargill Scott Telfer scored 16 points for Southland Sharks in an 83-70 home loss to Manawatu Jets with Liam Judd scoring 10 points and snaring 3 steals for the Jets.
The next opportunity to see NBL basketball live on the North Shore will be on April 19th when Auckland Tuatara host Southland Sharks at Eventfinda Stadium.
The Rapid League game begins at 6.30pm with the NBL encounter commencing at 7.30pm.
