Weekly Wrap - Local and overseas news

The New Zealand U17 Women’s National Team Selection Camp and U18 Men’s National Team Selection Camp were held last weekend in Tokoroa and Auckland respectively with Harbour athletes attending both camps.

Bailey Flavell and Kodee Williams-Sefo attended the women’s camp while Hadi Alshami, Bart Jackowski, Julius Halaifonua, Troy Supple, Josh Wylie and Chris Wylie were invited to the men’s camp.

NCAA Division I

Tayla Dalton scored 17 points on Senior Night at St Mary’s College, California but couldn’t prevent the Gaels slipping to a 78-74 overtime loss to San Francisco. She followed that with 15 points as the Gaels wrapped up West Coast Conference regular season play with a 69-48 success at Pepperdine.

Also concluding West Coast Conference play with a win were the University of Portland Pilots. Emme Shearer top scored for the Pilots with 18 points in the 75-63 defeat of Loyola Marymount on Saturday.

Fourty-eight hours earlier Emme scored almost a third of Portland’s points in their matchup with nationally ranked #16 Gonzaga. Emme scored 13 points but unfortunately Portland Pilots were outclassed going down 90-40. Flo Dallow contributed 6 points for the Pilots.

The West Coast Conference Tournament begins on March 7th.

Tom Beattie scored 9 points as Hawaii won 76-73 in overtime against University of California Riverside.

NCAA Division II

Sean Murphy had 17 points and 12 rebounds, his third straight double double and sixth of the season, as Nebraska Kearney finished the regular season with an 80-67 loss to Fort Hays State.

Charlie Dalton scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds as Concordia Irvine were beaten 73-71 in overtime by Westmont.

Kiani Saxon had 10 points and 8 rebounds as Missouri Western State beat Newman 86-68. A couple of days later Kiani posted even better numbers with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks in Missouri’s 86-83 loss to Pittsburg State.

Marvin Williams Dunn concluded his career at Ouachita Baptist University with 8 points in a 65-54 loss to Arkansas-Monticello. The former Rosmini College guard finished with 99 appearances in his 4-year NCAA career.

Hannah Wentworth scored a dozen points as Eckerd College defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 73-62.

Junior College

Boston Caldwell and Central Maine College were pipped 80-78 by New Hampshire Technical Institute in the Yankee Small Colleges Conference Grand Final. Boston had 11 points in the defeat. 

Zaaliyah Kailahi-Fulu scored 14 points as Chipola College defeated Pensacola State 67-62.

Professional Players

Akiene-Tera Reed and the Melbourne Boomers are tied at 1-1 in the best of three Australian Women’s National Basketball League semi-final series.

The Boomers were edged 90-86 by cross city rivals Southside Flyers (led by Lauren Jackson) in game one before bouncing back with a comprehensive 88-67 victory in game two.

Tera knocked down both of her three-point shots in totaling 11 points in game one and went even better in game two with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. The third game, to decide who will oppose Perth Lynx in the grand-final, will be played on Wednesday.

James Moors was in fine form but his club Leeuwarden were beaten 106-92 by Belfius Mons. James scored 17 points (7/10FG, 3/3FT).

In the Rumanian League Matt Freeman scored 9 points, making 3 from 5 triples, as Craiova beat Targa Jiu 71-67.
