Weekly Wrap - Emme Shearer joins elite company

In scoring 8 points for the University of Portland Pilots, in their 66-58 loss to Santa Clara, Emme Shearer reached 1,000 career points and has become the 18th Kiwi, and the third former Harbour rep, to score 1,000 points in Women’s NCAA Division I basketball.

The two former Harbour players to reach the mark before Emme were Akiene-Tera Reed (Virginia Commonwealth 2017-21 and the University of Southern California 2021-22) and Micaela Cocks (University of Oregon, 2006-10).

She is the sixth Harbour athlete overall to score 1,000 NCAA Division I points as Kirk Penney (University of Wisconsin Badgers, 1999-2003)Tai Webster (University of Nebraska Huskers, 2013-17) and Kruz Perrott-Hunt (University of South Dakota, 2019-23) achieved the feat in the men’s game.

In another Portland game Flo Dallow scored her West Coast Conference best 8 points (in just 9 minutes) during Portland’s 80-74 loss at Pacific University..

Also in NCAA Division I action Tom Beattie scored a team high and season high 15 points (5/7FG) as Hawaii went down 77-71 to UC Santa Barbara. Tom also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

NCAA Division II

Hannah Wentworth scored 9 points as Eckerd College (9-7) defeated Barry University 60-49 in Sunshine State Conference play.

Tessa Talo-Tomokino top scored for Northeastern State (8-9) in their 58-49 defeat at the hands of Missouri Western. Tessa scored 10 points in the defeat. 

Kiani Saxon brought up 200 points for the season as Missouri Western State lost on the buzzer to Rogers State 58-56. Kiani had 7 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

Junior College

Once again Boston Caldwell led the Central Maine scoring in both their 72-66 loss to Southern Maine and an 87-70 success against Albany College of Pharmacy. Boston scored 21 points in both games and finished the regular season with 432 points at 18.8 points per game.

Professional Players

James Moors scored a career high 22 points, on 9 from 11 shooting, as Leeuwarden recorded a convincing 101-82 victory against ZZ Leiden in the Dutch League.

Sam Waardenburg and Sam Mennenga scored 9 points apiece as Cairns Taipans upset Australian NBL ladder leaders Melbourne United 97-88. Waardenburg added 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks in the Taipans final game of the season.

Also in the ANBL Tai Webster scored 15 points for Perth Wildcats as they went down 86-72 at Tasmania Jack Jumpers.

Finally, don’t forget to get along to Eventfina Stadium this coming Sunday, February 25 (tip-off 4.30pm), to support the Tall Blacks in their FIBA Asia Cup Qualifier against Hong Kong – kids get in free with accompanying adults.

It’s an opportunity to support the national team that includes former Harbour reps Dan Fotu and Julius Halaifonua – Julius making his senior national team debut at the ripe old age of 17!!
