Weekly Wrap - An Emme Shearer milestone plus other US college news

Congratulations go to Emme Shearer who, has taken her career points tally at the University of Portland past the 700 points mark. Amongst the current 37 New Zealand players in NCAA Division I basketball she is the second highest scorer behind Charlisse Leger-Walker.

Emme also had a career high 7 steals to accompany 16 points as Portland were easy winners against Warner Pacific (86-49). Another former Harbour Basketball rep Flo Dallow was also prominent for Portland with a season best 14 points.

Another of Shearer’s former Harbour Basketball teammates, Tayla Dalton, is not far short of 700 points herself. Tayla made the first two baskets of the game and went on to make 10 points as St Mary’s College Gaels saw off the UC Irvine challenge to win a low scoring encounter 52-37. The Tall Ferns guard now has 698 career points.

In Men’s Division I action Tom Beattie scored 12 points on debut for the University of Hawaii as they beat local rivals Hawaii at Hilo 82-66.

In NCAA Division II play Kiani Saxon was a perfect 6 from 6 from the field for his 13 points as Missouri Western State moved to 3-0 after a 92-76 win against Rockhurst.

Sean Murphy had a highly efficient triple of 7 boards, 7 assists and 8 points (4/5FG) as Nebraska Kearney won a high scoring encounter with Chadron State 113-101.

Charlie Dalton corralled a season high 8 boards to go with a couple of points as Concordia Irvine got the better of Seattle Pacific to win 84-78.

Tessa Talo-Tomokino had a nice stat line of 11 points (5/8FG), 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals as Northeastern State beat Haskell 71-58.

Rashaan Smith had season highs in points (22) and rebounds (14) but couldn’t prevent Oklahoma Wesleyan being defeated 73-68 by Ottawa in the NAIA. Across the first five games she is leading the team in both those statistical categories as well as blocked shots (7).

In Junior College Qaizden Stephano continues to put up big numbers. Averaging 16 points a game she posted a team high 18 points (8/12FG) as Gillette College triumphed 84-50 against University of Jamestown.

Jaelah Clayton made 2 from 4 threes on her way to 11 points as Mineral Area College got the better of Lincoln Trail winning 83-31. Mineral Area are 6-1 to start the season.

Boston Caldwell scored 17 points although Central Maine College, in a high scoring affair, went down 103-98 to NHTI.

In the pro ranks Yanni Wetzell scored a season best 21 points (8/11FG) despite ALBA Berlin going down 105-78 to Weissenfels in the German League.

Matt Freeman was close to a double-double pulling down 10 rebounds to accompany 8 points as Craiova pulled off an 86-74 win over Ploiesti CSM in the Romanian League.

Still in Europe and Brayden Inger tallied 10 points as Hemel Storm won 93-81 at Bradford Demons in the English National Basketball League.
