Weekly Wrap - 3x3, NBL and collegiate news
Just a reminder that the first-ever 3x3 Trans-Tasman showdown between New Zealand and Australian teams in the inaugural international series begins on Wednesday in Invercargill.
There is Harbour representation in both the New Zealand Men’s and Women’s national teams with Harbour Breeze and Northern Kāhu player Azure Anderson in the 3x3 Tall Ferns squad while former Harbour reps Chris McIntosh and Denhym Brooke will feature for the 3x3 Tall Blacks.
The international games will be played alongside the 3x3 Cup, which also begins on Wednesday, with all games featured live on Sky Sport.
Local interest will centre around the performances of Northern Kāhu in the women’s tournament and Auckland Tuatara in the men’s tournament.
All four of the Kāhu squad have strong affiliations with Harbour. Bailey Flavell and Emma-Kaye Schroeder are current rep players, Keeley Tini is a former rep and Harbour Breeze player while Waiaria Putaranui-Henderson is also a former Breeze player.
The Tuatara squad comprises of former Harbour rep Reuben Fitzgerald and the ex-Mt Albert Grammar trio of Ryan Laumatia and the Leger brothers Josh and Will.
Harbour’s U19 National Championship winning guard Aaron Sievert was an original Tuatara selection but was forced to withdraw after suffering a broken wrist. Kodee Williams-Sefo also had to withdraw from the Kāhu team due to injury.
Keep a look out for other Harbour alumni suiting up for 3x3 teams outside our region with Jarrod Kenny (Hawkes Bay Hawks), Jayden Boucher (Bay of Plenty Whai), Liam Judd and Jackson Stent (both Manawatu Jets) also in action.
As you may have spotted on our socials recently Rebecca Moors has committed to the University of Hawaii from the 2024-25 season onwards. It’s worth pointing out that Rebecca, a two times National Secondary Schools champion with Westlake Girls, is the third member of the Moors family to gain an NCAA Division I scholarship – a fantastic achievement.
Brother James, now playing professionally in Holland, graduated from Colorado State University earlier this year while sister Jess also attended Colorado State before transferring to Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, where she recently commenced her sophomore year.
Over to the professional ranks where Corey Webster scored 14 points and brother Tai a dozen but Perth Wildcats slipped to a third straight Australian NBL loss after being defeated 89-78 at Adelaide 36ers.
An almost double-double from Brayden Inger helped Hemel Storm beat Worthing Storm 93-71 in English League Division 1 action. Brayden finished with a team high 9 rebounds to go with 13 points – making 3 from 7 three-pointers in the process.
Also close to a double-double was Isaac Fotu as Utsunomiya Brex split their Japanese League double header against Hiroshimo Dragonflies at the weekend.
Isaac made 6 from 7 from the field for 14 points, to accompany 9 rebounds, in a 71-60 victory on Sunday.
24-hours earlier Isaac had posted 14 points and 7 rebounds as Brex were pipped 83-81.
