Gus Dallow and Jameer Reed are members of the New Zealand team that are through to the quarter-finals at the FIBA U16 Men’s Asian Championship in Doha after finishing with a 3-0 record in Pool B at the 16-team tournament.

Winning their Pool means the Kiwis have direct entry to the last eight where they will meet the winners of the India versus hosts Qatar tie in Friday’s quarter-final.

The game on Friday will be pivotal as the top four teams from the Asian Championship progress to the 2024 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup.

The Kiwis began their campaign with a narrow 83-81 win against a fast finishing Korea having at one stage in the third quarter led by 16-points. Gus scored 4 points in the win while Jameer put together a fine stats line of 8 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and a block.

In their second game Jameer scored 11 and Gus 8 points as New Zealand dominated Jordan from start to finish in registering an emphatic 119-45 win before in the final pool game against Bahrain emerging with an almost identical lop-sided 117-43 result. Jameer scored a dozen points in that win on 5 from 8 shooting.

The 2023 Secondary Schools National Championships begin in Palmerston North next Monday with all four Harbour schools at the champs in action on the opening day.

Defending champions Westlake Girls High School begin their title defence against Fielding High School while Takapuna Grammar School will take on St Mary’s College, Wellington.

Northcote College have a tough start matching up against South Island Girl's Champions St Andrew’s College, Christchurch.

Rosmini College are the sole Harbour representative in the Boy’s Tournament and last year’s silver medallists open their campaign against Fielding High School.

With the new Australian NBL season only just over a week away the BNZ Breakers and the other nine teams are currently on the Gold Coast for the pre-season Blitz.

The Breakers will play three games at the Blitz and won their opening encounter in emphatic style against the Adelaide 36ers – a 101-75 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Cam Gliddon (19 points) and imports Parker Jackson-Cartwright (17 points and 8 assists) and Zylan Cheatham (13 points and 9 rebounds) led the way for the Breakers with former Harbour reps Tom Abercrombie and Dan Fotu also playing strong hands.

Tom contributed 9 points while Dan knocked down a pair of threes on his way to 12 points on a perfect 5 from 5 shooting.

The Breakers faced tougher opposition on Tuesday evening when they lined-up against the Tasmanian Jack Jumpers and fell 92-85. 

The Breakers first NBL regular season fixture will be against Cairns Taipans at Spark Arena on Saturday September 30. That should be an intriguing tie with the Taipans featuring former Harbour stars Sam Mennenga and Sam Waardenburg in their ranks.
