Two Harbour players have been named to both the Junior Ferns and Junior Tall Blacks squads for the FIBA U17 Oceania Championships to be held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from 2–7 October 2023.

The two women named to the JTF’s are Rebecca Moors and Amy Pateman while Josh Wyllie and Julius Halaifonua are named to the JTB’s. 

In addition Bartosz Jackowski and Hadi Alshami have been named as reserves for the Junior Tall Blacks.

For Amy and Julius it will be their second successive year playing international basketball as both played at the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cups. 

At the senior level the Tall Blacks, in their build up to the World Cup, lost both their games over the weekend. New Zealand were hammered 107-67 by Canada and then went down 69-68 to China – both games played in Germany.

Against China Isaac Fotu scored 9 points and added 4 rebounds while Yanni Wetzell had 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Both players were in double figures against Canada with Yanni scoring 12 points to accompany 4 rebounds while Isaac tallied 11 points.

Missing Tall Fern Penina Davidson BNZ Northern Kāhu went down 92-88 to Tokomanawa Queens in Porirua on Saturday night in the Tauihi Aotearoa league. Akiene-Tera Reed scored 24 points for Kāhu and in so doing became only the third New Zealand player to have amassed 200 points in the Tauihi.

The Kāhu sit second on the Tauihi ladder ahead of a trip to Tauranga on Thursday to take on Whai.

The top two divisions of Auckland Secondary Schools High School Basketball has reached the pointy end of the season with Harbour schools involved in all four divisions. In fact Harbour teams were regular season champions in three of the leagues and runners-up in the fourth.

In the Boy’s Premier Grade Rosmini College finished runners-up and will take on Auckland Grammar School in the semi-finals.

Westlake Girls High are the regular season Girl’s Premier Grade winners and they will meet fourth placed Takapuna Grammar School in the semi’s.

Bailey Flavell produced a special performance to carry Takapuna into the semi-finals. Bailey scored 50 points last Friday as Taka beat Mt Albert Grammar School 80-79 in overtime with the victory seeing Takapuna leapfrog St Kentigern College into fourth place on the ladder.

Northcote College secured the Boy’s Senior A regular season title a couple of weeks ago and will face Liston College in Friday’s semi-final.

Rangitoto College completed an unbeaten campaign to secure the Girls Senior A title and will meet Mt Roskill Grammar School in one semi-final. The other semi will see runners-up Manurewa High School take on third placed Carmel College.

The Men’s U23 National Championship and Women’s D League Championship are being held this week, beginning Wednesday, at Eventfinda Stadium. Get along and support the Harbour teams playing in these championships.
