2023 WABL Recap - Round 14
Welcome back from school holidays, and we are excited to get back to WABL games on Sundays!
The U12 Championship Girls took a tough loss to the Cougars, 40-48. London Franceschi led the team with 11 points. We sit in 3rd place on the ladder looking to find excellent form on our way to Finals. The U12 Girls Green sit in 5th on the ladder following a loss on the weekend. Coach Seb Miraudo and the team will look for a bounce back game versus Hills Raiders. The U12 Girls White continue their impressive season in div 2. We sit just 1 game behind 6th place and a finals berth. The U12-4 Girls similarly sit just 1 game back of 6th place Warwick 2s heading into round 15.
The U14 Championship girls had a 16-30 deficit at halftime and battled back to bring the score within striking distance before succumbing to the Tigers, 51-61. We currently sit in 5th place on a very competitive top half of the ladder. We will be jostling for an improved seed with our next game against Perry Lakes. Our U14-2 Wolfpack Girls put a thorough performance together to win 51-23 over Cockburn. Emily Epple and Amelie Barrett each scored 14 points. Multiple players on the team made plays all over the court as Dean Walter’s team played with a great spirit and rhythm. They currently sit in 5th and are poised to put together some more games of terrific form as they gear up for a finals push. The U14 Girls Green won 54-18 behind a 37-10 2nd half of play. Mya Pasic (16), Amelia Weaver (12), and Rose Ponosh (10) led the way for Wolfpack U14 Girls Green. Now sitting just 2 games behind a spot in finals with the impressive result. The U14 Girls White were buoyed by Jaylyn Basaran’s 18 points but fell to the Flames.
The U16 Champ Girls had a tough one with 2nd on the table Redbacks. Jannali Nelson and Sara Davis were impressive on the interior with 12 and 9 points respectively. Rose Wheeler poured in 25 points for the Wolves’ U16-2s Girls. After battling back from a 10-point halftime deficit, we went to the 4th down just 4 before eventually falling short 52-60. They maintain a steady position of 4th on the ladder moving to Round 15. The U16 Girls Green continue their impressive season, now 14-0 with 13 wins by 10 points or more. Alize Smith and Quinn Beasley with 18 and 11 respectively to pace the team. The U16 Girls White pushed their winning streak to 5 games with a convincing win over Hills Raiders. With this recent stretch, they are sitting 3 games clear of 7th place Perth Redbacks.
Moving to the U18 Women, our Champs team took a roaring 31-9 lead at the end of the first period against the Suns. With a final tally of 101-50 it was great to see the cohesion and competitiveness of the team as they face off with top-of-the-table Cockburn this week. U18-2 Women jumped out to a 41-2 halftime lead and rolled to victory to move into 3rd on the ladder. Jay Gates had a game-high 23 points. The U18 Women Green suffered a 60-67 loss despite 21 and 18 from Ava Tomazin and Sienna Hirst, respectively. The U18 Women White fell 44-51 against Eastern Suns. It was a close and hard-fought game throughout.
Our U12 Boys had an undefeated 4-0 weekend. The U12-4 Boys jumped out to a 17-5 lead and never looked back on their way to a 57-42 victory at Redbacks. James Fairhead had 19 points and Cruz Carlson had 14 to pace the team. The U12-3 Boys pulled out an impressive 47-46 win against the Senators. James Mratovich had a crucial finish at the basket in the final minute that put the Wolfpack up for good. The U12-2 Boys took a 41-23 lead heading the 4th quarter against the Slammers. Coach Robb Hobbs would be happy with the form thus far as the top-seeded Wolves have opened up a 3-game lead on 2nd place Suns with 4 rounds remaining. The U12 Championship Boys jumped back into 1st place with a 68-58 win over Senators who slip to 3rd place. Griff Gardiner and Hayden Montgomerie had 12 and 10 respectively. Hudson Francis had an incredible game with 25 points including 4 made 3-pointers.
The U14-4 Boys trailed by just 6 at halftime before losing touch in the 2nd half in their game against Rockinghams 2’s. Dylan Thomson continued his scoring barrage with 16 points in defeat. The U14-3 Boys used balanced scoring and a strong 2nd half to defeat the Suns. Now sitting solidly at 3rd place with huge potential to make noise comes Finals time. The U14-2 Boys battled valiantly against Senators. After establishing a 16-point lead to close the 3rd, the Wolfpack held on as the opposition made their charge in the 4th quarter. James Arnatt, Harrie Kuhn, and Ashton Thorpe had 21, 16, and 11 respectively. The U14 Championship Boys were within 12 at halftime before a deflated 3rd quarter saw them lose touch with their opponent. Aidan Kiely and Aiden Jones had 24 and 18 respectively.
The U16-4 Boys built an 8-point lead heading into the final frame. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to battle back behind 7 3s from one of their players to come out on top of our boys 86-83. Similarly, the U16-3 Boys had a 6-point lead heading to the 4th that turned into a 7-point defeat against Redbacks. It is great to see 5 players in double figures, including Chase Peroomal 13 points with 4 3s. The U16-2 Boys achieved a 6-point lead heading into the 4th against Hills Raiders. Unlucky as the Hills bounced back to win by 4, despite 23 points by Jack Goosen. The U16 Championship Boys had their 7-game unbeaten streak ended at the hands of the Eagles. 26 points from Loui Pibworth. Jarrid Alwan-Arab and Sol Herewini-Kapea had 22 and 17 in defeat.
The Wolfpack U18-4 Men played each quarter close except for the 3rd against the Redbacks 2s. With a balanced scoring effort, we fell short 62-84. Our U18-3 Men trailed by 16 at the end of the 1st quarter and were unable to close the gap over the ensuing 3 quarters. Lucas Kingswood had 20 to pace the pack. The U18-2 Men started impressively with a 25-20 1st quarter. Unfortunately, we were outscored 31-54 over the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Mathew Lowry, Chayce King, and Cooper Godden had 15, 13, and 10 respectively. Our U18 Championship Men prevailed 103-71 over Suns. The Wolves had 6 players score between 11 and 19 points in this runaway win. Now sitting *in 6th place based on %, the Wolves will hopefully have a strong next few weeks while they fight to lock in a finals bid.
The U20-2 Men had quite the game against Suns. Trailing by 5 headed into the 2nd half, the Wolfpack gave up a 10-27 3rd quarter. How resilient they were to come barnstorming back with a 35-18 4th quarter of their own. In the end, we ran out of time to complete the comeback. Jaemon Yam and Harrison McGuinness had 24 and 21 respectively. The U20 Championship Men had a competitive game with Cockburn, falling in the end by just 5 points. Joseph Plummer had a big 20-point effort.
Round 14 culminated in a 13-21 record for the Wolfpack.
