Weekly Wrap - Harbour players named to Tall Blacks
Following an intense four-day training camp in Auckland, Tall Blacks head coach, Pero Cameron and his coaching staff have selected a squad of 14 athletes to travel to Japan, Germany and China in advance of the FIBA World Cup.
There are three former Harbour representatives in the 14-man squad with Yanni Wetzell, Dan Fotu and Isaac Fotu named. Isaac is the most capped player in the group with 68 appearances while Yanni is the only player in the squad yet to be capped.
The Tall Blacks World Cup campaign begins with pool games, in the Philippines, against USA, Greece and Iran from August 26-30.
The Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa third round of games has just been completed and it was a highly successful round for BNZ Northern Kāhu. On the back of a massive double-double of 25 points and 20 rebounds from Penina Davidson the Kāhu completed an 83-71 victory against Whai at the Franklin Pool & Leisure Centre on Friday.
Besides the standout effort from Penina, Akiene-Tera Reed tallied 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Two days later Kāhu reversed the loss they suffered at the same venue two weeks ago leaving the Edgar Centre in Dunedin with a 67-59 victory over the previously unbeaten Southern Hoiho on Sunday afternoon.
Having been within one rebound of a double-double against Whai, Tera accomplished the feat against Hoiho amassing 13 points and 12 rebounds.
On the back of her strong showing for Kāhu, and for the Tall Ferns at the FIBA Asia Cup, Tera has been signed by the Melbourne Boomers for the 2023-24 Australian WNBL season. Tera will suit up alongside Penina for the Boomers.
Also heading to Australia for the summer is Rob Loe who has signed with Melbourne United for the upcoming NBL season. Having recently announced his retirement from that level of competition Rob has had a change of heart and will link up with the Dean Vickerman coached United in the coming weeks.
New Zealand U16 Men’s head coach Leyton Haddleton has named his squad of 12 for the upcoming FIBA U16 Asian Championship in Doha this September and it includes Harbour representatives Jameer Reed and Gus Dallow.
Both Jameer and Gus were members of the NZ U15 team that won a silver medal at the FIBA U15 Oceania Championship in 2022.
Finally congratulations to Dallas Clayton, a Harbour U23 representative in 2022, who has been awarded a scholarship at Georgia College & State University to play NCAA Division II basketball. Dallas has played the last two years at Missouri State Uni West Plains.
Good luck to all of the players mentioned above for the exciting new challenges that lie ahead of them.
