2023 WABL Recap - Round 8
Wolfpack WABL teams continued their 2023 campaign with a 15-21 record.
Wolfpack D-League Women were ousted in a gruelling game versus the Redbacks. The 52-58 defeat was just 2nd loss for this very strong team that will be eager to bounce back next week. Wolfpack D-League Men were successful in their trip to Geraldton. Luca O’Brien put the capstone on an impressive quarter with a halfcourt buzzer beater to put the Wolfpack up 35-15 at the end of the 1st quarter. Gabe Chadinha and Ben Geel each poured in 29 points as the Men took a 96-78 victory on the road.
The U20 Men managed a pair of close wins on the weekend. The Champs Men used balanced scoring with Jack Kingswood (25), Joseph Plummer (21), and Beau Gardiner (11) to defeat the Mandurah Magic. The game was nip-and-tuck throughout and the Wolves ultimately prevailed 85-84. The U20-2 Men managed a 2-point victory over the Redbacks behind 15 points from Frederick Maddison, 12 points for Harrison McGuinness, and 11 and 10 points for Ewan Butler and Lachlan Enright, respectively. It’s great to see the team come together to secure this 76-74 victory.
The U18 Women split the weekend 2-2. The U18-2 Women won 57-43 behind a strong 19 points from Chloe Goldsmith and 11 from Jorja Montgomerie. With just a 3 point margin coming out of halftime, the girls outscored the opposing Lakeside team 35-24. The U18 Green side delivered a similar margin victory, using an 8-point halftime lead to secure a 14-point win against a quality Mandurah side. Lily Sudano had 10 points to lead the U18 White Wolfpack Women. Summer Wilson knocked down a 3-pointer but ultimately it wasn’t enough to defeat the opponent.
The U18 Men competed hard but came up short in this weekend’s games, totalling a record of 1-3. The U18 Champs Men used a huge surge in the 2nd half to handle the Warwick Senators. The team wasn’t satisfied cutting a mid-2nd quarter deficit from 20 to just 6 entering halftime. Matt Hughes’ team came out with a 35-20 3rd quarter and backed that up with a 30-12 final frame. That’s 65-32 in the 2nd half and a 47-point turnaround! What a tremendous effort for our Men. Seven players scored double figures, led by Kieran McNamara (28 points including 3 triples.) Caleb Power narrowly missed double figures with 8 points but he was instrumental in setting up his teammates as well as providing quality defense.
A 2-2 record belongs to our U16 Girls this weekend. The U16-2 Girls took command early, establishing a 9-point lead by the end of the first period en route to a 28-point victory. Rose Wheeler led all scorers with 22, follow by 12 for Jemma Crock and 10 each for Agook Chol and Luca Kuhn. In a clash between Wolves Green and Wolves White, 19 points for Lucy Corden and 18 points for Asha Jennings proved to be too much to overcome. What a great contest it was!
The U16 Champ Boys were effective in transition and attacking the basket on their way to a 103-75 victory over Senators. Wieu Atuer was the games leading scorer with 20 points. The rest of the U16 Boys teams were unlucky on the weekend with strong and spirited efforts but in the end it wasn’t enough to get over the line.
Grace Tomazin and Jade Timoko poured in 21 and 12 points, respectively, to power the U14 Champ Girls to a 68-35 victory. The U14 Girls showed well despite the 1-3 record on the weekend. Izzy O’Donnell’s 15 points were a bright spot for the U14-2 Girls. Jovie Boehm tallied 11 in a loss by the U14 Girls – White.
The U14 Champ Boys were unsuccessful versus Lakeside. Harrie Kuhn mustered 12 points for the U14-2 Boys in their effort versus Warwick. The 14-3 Boys continued an impressive string of games with a 14-point win over Lakeside. The 16 points of Ashton Naylor is noteworthy and that each of his teammates entered the scoring column. The trio of Alexander Wood (16), Ash Langlands (13) and Dylan Thomson (10) bolstered the U14-4 Boys as they were able to take the victory over Perry Lakes 56-49.
The U12 Champ Girls moved to 8-2 on the season which each player contributing to the scoring and overall success of the team. The other games in the U12 Girls were hard-fought contests that will prove as valuable experience as we move towards the midpoint of the WABL season.
The U12 Champs Boys held the opposition to just 42 points as they steamrolled to a 21-point victory over the Lightning. They sit at 7-1 atop the ladder moving to this weekends clash with the Eagles of East Perth. The U12-4 Boys secured an 11-point win over the U12-2 Flames. Our Wolfpack boys sit in a 4-way tie for top of the table, with a strong 6-2 record.
